About Konstanz district

Konstanz district lies in southern Baden-Württemberg, along the Swiss border. It includes the western Lake Constance area and much of the Hegau, so choosing where to live means choosing between lakeside settlements, inland towns and countryside (district background (opens in a new tab)).

Konstanz is the main university town, Radolfzell sits on the Untersee, and Singen has substantial industrial employers. Beyond them, Engen offers a historic old town in the Hegau. These are distinct places rather than neighbourhoods of one city (HTWG student handbook (opens in a new tab), Radolfzell (opens in a new tab), Constellium (opens in a new tab), Engen tourism (opens in a new tab)).

Universities here

Universities in Konstanz district, biggest first.

The University of Konstanz and HTWG provide the district’s campus-based university life; Allensbach Hochschule offers online distance study (HTWG student handbook (opens in a new tab), Allensbach Hochschule (opens in a new tab)). Living outside Konstanz can work: Radolfzell has direct trains, but University of Konstanz students must also allow for the onward journey to the hilltop campus by bus or bicycle (DB timetable (opens in a new tab), university mobility guide (opens in a new tab)). Consider this district if access to the lake and countryside matters to you, and compare complete campus journeys before choosing accommodation.

Housing

Start looking early. The University of Konstanz describes local accommodation as difficult to find and expensive, with limited student-residence availability. A published Seezeit room price is a useful budget reference, but it does not represent the private rental market or guarantee a room (university housing guidance (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

Housing deserves particular attention: Seezeit currently lists shared-flat rooms at Sonnenbühl Ost Hochhaus for €309–€362 per month including ancillary costs, plus an €850 deposit; checked November 2026 (Seezeit (opens in a new tab)). For occasional regional travel, VHB’s 2026 adult single fares start at €3.40 for one zone (VHB fares (opens in a new tab)). Do not assume that this district will be inexpensive simply because it is outside a major metropolis: the university explicitly describes Konstanz’s housing market as expensive (housing guidance (opens in a new tab)).

Jobs & employers

The verified employer mix spans university work, tourism, pharmaceuticals and aluminium manufacturing. This gives students several directions to explore, although a company’s presence does not mean it currently has suitable part-time vacancies (university jobs (opens in a new tab), Mainau careers (opens in a new tab), Takeda (opens in a new tab), Constellium (opens in a new tab)). The university’s ZEuS portal and Seezeit’s regional jobs board are useful starting points for student employment and internships (student job resources (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Rail is particularly useful along the Konstanz–Radolfzell–Singen–Engen corridor. DB’s published timetable shows Radolfzell–Konstanz journeys of approximately 16–23 minutes, depending on the train (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)). Add the campus transfer: the University of Konstanz is on Giessberg hill and has bus connections from the main station and Wollmatingen station (university mobility guide (opens in a new tab)). Direct Konstanz–Zürich HB services can take about 1 hour 16 minutes; check your travel date (DB connection overview (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers German local transport, but onward Swiss travel from Konstanz needs an appropriate additional ticket. On the Konstanz–Meersburg ferry it is accepted only when travelling aboard through bus 700 (university ticket overview (opens in a new tab), VHB validity rules (opens in a new tab)).

Zurich Airport (ZRH)

A practical major international gateway recommended by HTWG, with direct trains to Konstanz. The most convenient airport depends on your address within the district and available flights (HTWG arrival information (opens in a new tab), SBB connections (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold winters, a gradual spring warm-up and comfortable summers with rain as well as sunshine; pack waterproof layers alongside summer clothes. The social calendar changes with the weather: Fasnacht brings late-winter celebrations, summer brings lakeside festivals, and the Christmas market marks the darker end of the year (Konstanz events calendar (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht is a visible local tradition, with masks, processions and festivities in Konstanz. It is a useful introduction to regional customs beyond university life (Konstanz events (opens in a new tab)).

Konstanz has student parties, pubs and music clubs, according to HTWG’s international handbook. For frequent evenings out, it is the clearest starting point when choosing where to live; if you rent elsewhere, check how you will get home after events (HTWG student handbook (opens in a new tab)).

HTWG’s international handbook says English is widely understood, but basic German is valuable in everyday situations (student handbook (opens in a new tab)). For work, aim to keep improving beyond basic conversation: the University of Konstanz stresses that German substantially expands employment options and points students towards language courses and tandem practice (Career Service guidance (opens in a new tab)). You may also hear local Alemannic speech, particularly around traditional celebrations (Konstanz background (opens in a new tab)).
