# Study in Bavaria, Germany

> Bavaria has 50 universities and colleges offering 3,641 degree courses (1,359 Bachelor's, 1,598 Master's), and 29% of them are taught in English or bilingually. A student flat costs about €880 a month (30 m² flat in Munich incl. utilities, MLP Studentenwohnreport 2026). Tuition for non-EU students: TUM €2–6k — TUM charges new non-EU students €2,000–6,000 per semester; LMU charges none. Bavarian universities may set their own non-EU fees (TH Deggendorf asks a €500 service fee), so check yours.

Germany's largest state by area: the Alps, lakes and castles, and some of the country's strongest engineering and tech universities. Munich is big, international and expensive; Würzburg, Erlangen, Regensburg or Deggendorf are smaller and much easier on rent.

## Culture & people

Bavarians are proud of their traditions — beer gardens, brass bands, Dirndl and Lederhosen at festivals — and just as proud of their engineering. Life is outdoorsy: lakes in summer, skiing in winter, and the Alps within reach of most cities.

The state is really three regions: Old Bavaria around Munich, Franconia in the north with its wine and Nuremberg bratwurst, and Swabia around Augsburg. Catholic holidays mean a few extra days off each year, and shops stay closed on Sundays.

## Events & festivals

- **Oktoberfest, Munich** (Late Sept – early Oct): The world's biggest folk festival, on the Theresienwiese. Entry is free; a seat in a tent on weekends needs an early start.
- **Christkindlesmarkt, Nuremberg** (Advent): One of Germany's most famous Christmas markets, on the main market square.
- **Bayreuth Festival** (July – August): The Richard Wagner opera festival in the Festspielhaus he built for his own works.
- **Volksfeste** (All summer): Almost every Bavarian town has its own beer festival with rides, music and long tables.

## Places to see

- **Neuschwanstein** (Castle): The fairy-tale castle of King Ludwig II in the Alpine foothills near Füssen.
- **Zugspitze** (Mountain): Germany's highest peak at 2,962 m, reached by cog railway and cable car from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
- **Regensburg old town** (UNESCO): Medieval old town and stone bridge on the Danube.
- **Bavarian Forest National Park** (Nature): Germany's first national park, founded in 1970 on the Czech border.
- **Passau** (City): The city of three rivers — Danube, Inn and Ilz — on the Austrian border.
- **Würzburg Residence** (UNESCO): A baroque palace in the heart of Franconia's wine region.

## Getting around

Munich's old semester ticket is suspended; instead, anyone studying in Bavaria can buy the Bavarian discounted Deutschlandticket (€43 a month in 2026), which covers buses, trams and regional trains across Germany. Some universities outside Munich bundle a semester ticket share into the fee, which lowers the price further.

Fast ICE trains link Munich, Nuremberg and Würzburg with the rest of Germany, and Munich and Nuremberg have international airports. Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic are all a short trip away.
