About Deggendorf district
Deggendorf district stretches across the Danube in Lower Bavaria. The Bavarian Forest rises to the north, while flatter countryside lies to the south; the Isar joins the Danube near Deggendorf town. This gives the district quite different settings for everyday life, from town streets to riverside villages and wooded hills (district geography (opens in a new tab)).
Deggendorf is the university base, while Plattling is an important railway interchange (DIT directions (opens in a new tab)). Beyond these towns, distinctive local sights include Metten’s baroque monastery library and the Asambasilika in Osterhofen-Altenmarkt (Metten Abbey (opens in a new tab), Osterhofen (opens in a new tab)). The Lallinger Winkel adds a landscape of traditional fruit orchards (Bavarian Forest tourism (opens in a new tab)).
Main towns
Deggendorf
The district’s university town; DIT’s main campus is at Dieter-Görlitz-Platz (DIT directions (opens in a new tab)).
Plattling
A railway interchange for connections towards Deggendorf, Munich, Passau and Regensburg (DIT transport guide (opens in a new tab)).
Osterhofen
Its Altenmarkt district contains the Asambasilika, with an interior created by the Asam brothers (Osterhofen (opens in a new tab)).
Metten
Home to a monastery whose baroque library can be visited on guided tours (Metten Abbey (opens in a new tab)).

Deggendorf Institute of Technology is the district’s university, making Deggendorf town the practical starting point for a housing search. Check your programme’s teaching location before signing: DIT also has campuses in Pfarrkirchen and Cham, outside this district (DIT locations (opens in a new tab)). Other nearby university towns include Passau, Landshut and Regensburg, but compare actual door-to-door journeys before choosing to commute. For accommodation in smaller settlements, check the local bus and Rufbus timetable first (VDW district routes (opens in a new tab)). This setting is worth considering if you want university activities alongside access to countryside.

Housing
There are Studierendenwerk residences, private student apartment buildings and shared flats, but the available evidence does not establish whether the wider market is tight or relaxed. DIT recommends starting early because listings often appear around three months before move-in (DIT accommodation (opens in a new tab)).
The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.
How to find a place
- Search DIT’s Wohnungsbörse and contact accommodation-dit@th-deg.de for housing-search advice (DIT accommodation (opens in a new tab)).
- Degree-seeking students can apply directly to the Studierendenwerk; exchange students should follow DIT’s International Office application route (DIT accommodation (opens in a new tab)).
- Check WG-Gesucht, the Studierendenwerk Zimmerbörse and the noticeboard beside the canteen and café in DIT’s F building (DIT accommodation (opens in a new tab)).
- Before choosing a village address, check both your morning journey and your last return connection in the VDW timetable (district routes (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living
Useful budget anchors are the €372–443 monthly apartment rents at Untere Himmelreichstraße and DIT’s €82 student-services contribution per semester (STWNO (opens in a new tab), DIT practical information (opens in a new tab)). Many non-EU/EEA students additionally owe a €500 service fee per semester, with a €60 application fee and specified exemptions; check your own category before budgeting (DIT fee rules (opens in a new tab)). DIT currently lists its discounted Deutschlandticket at €43 per month, checked November 2026 (DIT transport guide (opens in a new tab)). These are individual costs, not a complete monthly budget; no reliable like-for-like comparison with a large German city was established.
Jobs & employers
Technology, manufacturing and healthcare offer different routes into local employment: congatec develops embedded computing products in Deggendorf, Kermi recruits in Plattling, and DONAUISAR Klinikum operates a hospital in Deggendorf (congatec (opens in a new tab), Kermi careers (opens in a new tab), DONAUISAR locations (opens in a new tab)). For students, the clearest verified opportunities are technical and commercial working-student roles. DIT’s Career Service provides a job board and application support (DIT careers (opens in a new tab)).
Typical student jobs
- Software R&D working-student roles at congatec in Deggendorf (student opportunities (opens in a new tab)).
- Controlling and inside-sales working-student roles or internships at congatec (student opportunities (opens in a new tab)).
- Heating-technology development placements at Kermi in Plattling (Kermi careers (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around
VDW publishes the district’s regional bus and Rufbus routes; Rufbus journeys require booking at least 60 minutes before the line’s first stop (VDW routes (opens in a new tab), district booking instructions (opens in a new tab)). The Waldbahn route links Deggendorf with Plattling and the Bavarian Forest (DB route information (opens in a new tab)). For November 2026, DB’s examples show roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to Passau and around 2 hours to Munich, involving buses as well as trains depending on the route (DB to Passau (opens in a new tab), DB to Munich (opens in a new tab)). These are temporary planning examples: the Obertraubling–Passau railway closure is scheduled to last until 12 December 2026 (Passau transport notice (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers participating local buses and regional trains, but generally excludes ICE, IC and EC services (DB ticket conditions (opens in a new tab)).
- Main stations
- Deggendorf Hbf — on the Waldbahn route between Plattling and Bayerisch Eisenstein (DB (opens in a new tab)).
- Plattling — the district’s long-distance interchange and an ICE stop; check current construction restrictions (official arrival guide (opens in a new tab)).
- Nearest airport
Munich Airport (MUC)
The main international airport option. DIT places it approximately 110 km away and gives a general bus/train journey estimate of around two hours to its Deggendorf campus; check the timetable for your arrival date (DIT directions (opens in a new tab)).

Pack for cold, frosty winters and warmer summers with rain rather than uninterrupted sunshine. Spring is a good time to explore the blossoming orchards of the Lallinger Winkel (regional tourism board (opens in a new tab)). Keep waterproof layers useful throughout the year, especially if cycling to class. Advent brings the Christmas market back to Deggendorf’s town centre (city market page (opens in a new tab)).
Culture, language & food
Bavarian dialect and local traditions have a visible place in cultural life: Deggendorf’s Bairischer Mundarttag brings together dialect writers, music and public events (city cultural programme (opens in a new tab)). Monastery visits offer another perspective on the area, including Metten’s baroque library (Metten Abbey (opens in a new tab)).
For meeting people, start with campus organisations. Erasmus Student Network Deggendorf organises excursions and parties, while DIT’s international tutors arrange intercultural activities (DIT campus life (opens in a new tab), international student support (opens in a new tab)). Think of this as a town-based student social scene; a metropolitan range of nightlife should not be the main reason to choose the district.
DIT offers English-language practical guidance and international tutors who help with study questions and everyday life (international student support (opens in a new tab)). Outside that support network, plan to use German for housing, appointments and work. As a practical learning target, aim for B1 everyday German and continue towards B2 for a wider job search; these are recommendations, not universal admission requirements. Bairisch is part of local cultural life, so spoken dialect may sound different from classroom German (Deggendorf’s dialect programme (opens in a new tab)).
Local food
Deggendorfer Knödel
The local sweet version combines sponge cake with whipped cream; do not assume every Deggendorfer Knödel is a savoury dumpling (regional tourism board (opens in a new tab)).
Lallinger Most
A fermented fruit drink associated with the traditional orchards of the Lallinger Winkel (Bavarian Forest tourism (opens in a new tab)).
Apfelmosttorte
Apple-must cake is featured as a Lallinger Winkel regional recipe (Bavarian Forest tourism (opens in a new tab)).
