About Freising district

Freising district belongs to Upper Bavaria’s Munich region. Its landscape combines the Isar and Amper river valleys with rolling countryside and part of the Hallertau hop-growing area. Freising, Neufahrn and Moosburg are its main population centres. (District background (opens in a new tab))

Freising’s particular mix is brewing and science: the Weihenstephan and Hofbrauhaus breweries sit alongside university research and brewing-equipment businesses. Beyond the university town, Moosburg offers a historic centre between the Isar and Amper floodplains. (Freising brewing culture (opens in a new tab), Moosburg tourism (opens in a new tab))

Universities here

Universities in Freising district, biggest first.

Freising is a university location in its own right: HSWT has its Weihenstephan campus here, and TUM’s School of Life Sciences is also based in Freising-Weihenstephan. (HSWT (opens in a new tab), TUM campus (opens in a new tab)) It is worth considering if you want campus life alongside gardens and countryside. For courses in Munich, selected regional trains take approximately 25–27 minutes from Freising station to München Hauptbahnhof, before your onward campus journey. Choose accommodation around your actual teaching location. (DB timetable (opens in a new tab))

Housing

Start searching early and pursue several options together. The Studierendenwerk reports strong demand for affordable accommodation; its October 2026 list estimates a two-semester wait for shared-flat rooms at Lange Point. A residence application therefore needs a private-market backup. (Studierendenwerk housing (opens in a new tab), Current rents and waiting times (opens in a new tab))

Cost of living

For winter semester 2026/27, HSWT lists a €97 semester contribution at Weihenstephan. (HSWT fees (opens in a new tab)) The regular Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month; eligible students can obtain Bavaria’s discounted version for €43 per month, subject to proof of eligibility. (MVG Deutschlandticket (opens in a new tab), MVG student discount (opens in a new tab)) Keep rent as a separate, carefully checked budget item: affordable accommodation is scarce, so do not assume that living outside Munich automatically makes housing inexpensive. (Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab))

Jobs & employers

Useful local sectors include semiconductors, brewing technology and airport operations. Texas Instruments has manufacturing and other business functions in Freising; Steinecker works in brewing technology; Munich Airport offers internships and working-student positions. These are relevant search directions for technical and business students, rather than guarantees of a suitable vacancy. Getting around

Freising has S1 services and regional trains; selected regional services reach München Hauptbahnhof in approximately 25–27 minutes. Check your travel date for alterations. (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)) TUM lists buses 637, 638 and 639 between Freising station and Weihenstephan, plus X660 serving Weihenstephaner Berg and Garching Forschungszentrum. Allow for this last part of the journey when comparing addresses. (Campus directions (opens in a new tab)) The Deutschlandticket covers local and regional transport, including the MVV network, but not ordinary ICE, IC or EC travel. Expect cold, often frosty winters and warmer summers that still bring substantial rain; waterproof layers are useful throughout the year. Spring through autumn is the main season for exploring the Weihenstephan display gardens, while the Hofgarten and Parterregarten remain accessible year-round. (Garden seasons (opens in a new tab)) Summer brings the Altstadtfest, followed by the Volksfest in September. (City festival calendar (opens in a new tab))

Culture, language & food

Brewing is part of everyday local identity as well as university research. Freising’s traditional breweries are Weihenstephan and the Gräfliches Hofbrauhaus, and the city calendar includes beer celebrations and summer street festivals. (Brewing culture (opens in a new tab), Festival calendar (opens in a new tab))

For evenings out, look at actual programmes rather than expecting a large-city club scene. The Lindenkeller hosts rock, jazz, hip-hop, comedy, theatre and poetry slams; TUM’s Weihenstephan Language Café offers another way to meet people across languages. (Lindenkeller (opens in a new tab), TUM international community (opens in a new tab))

English can support your academic start where your chosen modules are taught in it: HSWT lists both German- and English-language study options for exchange students. Check the language of your actual programme. (HSWT exchange guidance (opens in a new tab)) For daily life, aim to build practical German; B1 is a useful personal target, not a universal admission requirement. HSWT offers German as a foreign language, and local cultural programmes also include dialect performances. (HSWT Language Centre (opens in a new tab), Lindenkeller (opens in a new tab))
