About Landshut

Landshut lies on the River Isar and is the administrative capital of Lower Bavaria. This guide covers the independent city, which is separate from the surrounding Landkreis Landshut. Its historic centre is known for Gothic buildings, St Martin’s Church and Trausnitz Castle (Landshut background (opens in a new tab)).

Student life has another focal point in Schönbrunn, where Hochschule Landshut’s campus sits east of the centre. Choosing between the old town and the campus area means weighing access to central amenities against your everyday journey to classes (university student guide (opens in a new tab)).

Universities in Landshut, biggest first.

Landshut has its own university of applied sciences, Hochschule Landshut, with an International Office supporting incoming students (university (opens in a new tab)). It is worth considering if you want to study locally while retaining rail access to larger cities: selected regional trains take roughly 20 minutes to Freising, 45–50 minutes to Munich Hauptbahnhof and 40–50 minutes to Regensburg Hauptbahnhof. Those are station-to-station times; add the journey to your actual campus before committing to a daily commute (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)).

Housing

Start searching before arrival: the university warns that rooms are taken quickly. Options include Studierendenwerk residences, private student apartments and shared flats; the published residence prices below should not be treated as private-market averages (university student guide (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

Housing choice will strongly affect your budget: STWNO lists private-bathroom accommodation at Bürgermeister-Zeiler-Straße 14/16 for €261–272 monthly (residence (opens in a new tab)). Hochschule Landshut’s Studierendenwerk contribution is €82 per semester, and the semester bus ticket ended with winter semester 2026/27, so transport must be budgeted separately (university fees (opens in a new tab)). The standard Deutschlandticket costs €63 monthly in 2026; DB publishes a rise to €66.80 from January 2027 (DB (opens in a new tab)). These figures are individual costs, not a complete living-cost estimate.

Jobs & employers

Landshut has a substantial industrial employment base: BMW produces vehicle components, SCHOTT develops electronic-packaging products, and ebm-papst operates its heating-technology division here. These are relevant employers to investigate for technical placements and graduate careers (BMW (opens in a new tab), SCHOTT (opens in a new tab), ebm-papst (opens in a new tab)). For work alongside classes, the university maintains a separate board for casual, holiday and mini-jobs (Nebenjobbörse (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Stadtwerke operates local buses within the MVV network and publishes a Studibus timetable grouping university connections (Stadtwerke (opens in a new tab)). From Landshut Hauptbahnhof, selected regional services take about 20 minutes to Freising, 45–50 minutes to Munich Hauptbahnhof and 40–50 minutes to Regensburg Hauptbahnhof; check your particular departure for alterations (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers local buses and regional trains; it generally excludes ICE, IC and EC services (DB ticket conditions (opens in a new tab)). Your student card is no longer a semester transport ticket from winter 2026/27 (STWNO (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold winters with frequent frost, a gradually warming spring and warm summers that still bring substantial rain. Bring waterproof layers as well as winter clothing. For breaks from studying, Mühleninsel offers riverside paths and lawns in the warmer months (East Bavaria Tourism (opens in a new tab)); the Christmas market gives late autumn and early winter a recurring city-centre outing (City of Landshut (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Historical traditions have a visible place in city life. The Landshuter Hochzeit recreates the marriage of Duke Georg and the Polish princess Hedwig; it normally runs every four years, with the next edition announced for 25 June–18 July 2027. It is not an annual festival (organiser (opens in a new tab)).

For an ordinary evening, the tourism office’s dining guide includes taverns, beer gardens and venues offering concerts, readings and games evenings. Think of these as starting points for a social routine rather than assuming a large metropolitan club scene (Landshut tourism guide (opens in a new tab)).

English-language support is available through the university’s International Office, and its student guide explicitly says the Career Service can advise in English (university (opens in a new tab), student guide (opens in a new tab)). Do not assume every local job works in English: the university’s jobs board includes customer-facing roles requiring good German (jobs board (opens in a new tab)). As practical preparation, aim towards B1–B2 German for independent daily life and a wider job search; this is advice, not a university admission requirement.
