About Memmingen

Memmingen is a small city in Bavarian Swabia, associated with both Upper Swabia and the Allgäu. Its historic centre has merchants’ houses, surviving fortifications and a stream running through the old town (Memmingen background (opens in a new tab), Tourist Information (opens in a new tab)).

The city combines a historic centre with industrial employment: Rohde & Schwarz manufactures electronics here, while Goldhofer develops heavy transport and airport vehicles. Memmingen also has an important place in the history of rights and freedoms: the rebellious peasants’ Twelve Articles were formulated at the Kramerzunft in 1525 (Rohde & Schwarz (opens in a new tab), Goldhofer (opens in a new tab), Tourist Information (opens in a new tab)).

Neighbourhoods

Nearest universities

No university in Memmingen itself — these are the nearest (straight-line distance).

Memmingen has no university. Nearby options include Kempten University of Applied Sciences, Biberach University of Applied Sciences, the two universities in Weingarten and Hochschule Neu-Ulm. Kempten is worth considering for a rail commute: direct regional trains take roughly 25–30 minutes to its main station in the published timetable, before your onward journey to campus (DB timetable via DING (opens in a new tab)). Check the complete journey against your classes before choosing accommodation, particularly for Biberach or Weingarten. Memmingen may suit someone with a local work placement or an employer-linked degree: Rohde & Schwarz explicitly offers dual study in computer science and electrical engineering, alongside apprenticeships (Rohde & Schwarz (opens in a new tab)).

Housing

Plan your search around private flats, shared accommodation and housing cooperatives. The city’s own housing guide points applicants to WG-Gesucht, ordinary property portals, Memminger Wohnungsbau and Siebendächer (city housing guide (opens in a new tab)). A commercial rent index provides a budgeting reference, but does not establish that rooms are easy to find or that student housing is inexpensive (Immoportal (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

How to find a place

  • Search WG-Gesucht for rooms in Memmingen; the city specifically recommends it for shared accommodation (city housing guide (opens in a new tab)).
  • Contact Memminger Wohnungsbau eG as well as private landlords; it is one of the housing providers listed by the city (city housing guide (opens in a new tab)).
  • Submit a Mieterselbstauskunft to Siebendächer Baugenossenschaft to register your interest. Membership is normally required, so ask about cooperative shares and availability (Siebendächer (opens in a new tab)).
  • Compare listings on ImmobilienScout24, meinestadt.de and Kleinanzeigen, all named in the city’s housing guidance. Ask for the total monthly cost, including heating and other charges, before comparing offers (city housing guide (opens in a new tab)).
  • For a university commute, check each address against the bus network and your return train. VVM publishes separate routes for Amendingen, Steinheim and the other outer neighbourhoods (VVM (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living

Budget for the full rent including utilities and your university commute. In 2026, the standard Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month and covers participating local and regional transport; long-distance trains are excluded (city transport information (opens in a new tab)). For occasional local journeys, VVM lists a one-zone adult single ticket at €2.20 and a one-zone day ticket, valid from 08:00, at €4.20 from January 2026 (VVM fares (opens in a new tab)). Compare actual accommodation offers with those in your university town: any rental saving needs to justify the extra travel time and costs.

Jobs & employers

Electronics and engineering provide concrete routes into student employment. Rohde & Schwarz’s Memmingen plant advertises internships, working-student positions and thesis projects; Goldhofer also recruits students locally. These are useful starting points for relevant degree subjects, rather than evidence that an English-only job will be available (Rohde & Schwarz (opens in a new tab), Goldhofer (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Memmingen station connects the Ulm–Kempten and Munich–Lindau rail corridors (city mobility guide (opens in a new tab)). The published 2026 timetable has direct regional journeys of roughly 25–30 minutes to Kempten Hbf and around 35 minutes on faster services to Ulm; stopping services take longer (DB timetable via DING (opens in a new tab)). VVM buses connect the neighbourhoods with ZOB, and some services operate as call-ahead shared taxis, marked AST (VVM (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers ordinary local and regional services, but not long-distance trains. Check date-specific schedules and construction changes before travelling (city transport information (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold, frequently frosty winters and mild summers with plenty of rain: waterproof shoes and layers are useful throughout the academic year. Summer offers longer evenings for walking, although it is not reliably dry. The local calendar includes Fischertag in late July and the Christmas market during Advent (Bavarian heritage register (opens in a new tab), Tourist Information (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Local traditions remain visible in the Fischertag, the annual celebration centred on fishing and cleaning the Stadtbach. It is recognised in Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage programme (Bavarian heritage register (opens in a new tab)). For year-round culture, Landestheater Schwaben’s main venue is the historic Memmingen theatre, with contemporary drama, classics and musical productions (Bezirk Schwaben (opens in a new tab)).

For evenings out, start with the old-town bars and the theatre programme; the tourism office also identifies a rooftop cocktail bar and the MEWO Kunsthalle among local outings (Tourist Information (opens in a new tab)). With no university in the city, plan deliberately how you will join classmates’ activities in your campus town.

Do not assume that English will cover every housing enquiry, workplace conversation or administrative appointment. As a practical learning target, aim for B1 German for everyday independence and B2 for more demanding work conversations; these are suggestions, not universal admission or employment requirements. You may hear a local Swabian dialect related to the speech of the Iller valley, with differences from neighbouring Allgäu dialects (Memmingen language background (opens in a new tab)).

Studying in Memmingen: FAQ

Is there a university in Memmingen?

Memmingen has no university. Nearby university towns include Kempten, Biberach an der Riß, Weingarten and Neu-Ulm.

Is Memmingen a good place to live as a student?

It is worth considering if you have a local placement or are comfortable commuting. Direct regional trains make Kempten a practical option to investigate, but the roughly 25–30-minute station-to-station journey does not include reaching campus (DB timetable via DING (opens in a new tab)).

How do I get from Memmingen to Kempten for university?

Take a direct RE75 regional train to Kempten (Allgäu) Hbf; many published journeys take roughly 25–30 minutes. Allow additional time for the journey to campus and check your travel date for timetable changes (DB timetable via DING (opens in a new tab)).

Is Memmingen expensive for students?

Immoportal’s 2026 figure for medium residential locations is approximately €11.96 per square metre per month excluding utilities. It is a commercial advertised-rent indicator, not a student-room average; compare actual total rents and commuting costs before choosing Memmingen (Immoportal (opens in a new tab)).

What student jobs are available in Memmingen?

Rohde & Schwarz offers working-student opportunities in areas such as IT, data analytics and purchasing. Goldhofer also lists local working-student and internship opportunities; availability and language requirements depend on the role (Rohde & Schwarz (opens in a new tab), Goldhofer (opens in a new tab)).

Can I do a dual degree with an employer in Memmingen?

Yes. Rohde & Schwarz advertises employer-linked study in computer science and electrical engineering at its Memmingen site, while PFEIFER describes study with extended practical experience in several engineering subjects. Check the partner university, teaching language and employer’s entry requirements before applying (Rohde & Schwarz (opens in a new tab), PFEIFER (opens in a new tab)).
