About Rosenheim

Rosenheim is an independent city in Upper Bavaria, where the Mangfall meets the Inn. This guide covers the city itself, which is administratively separate from the surrounding Landkreis Rosenheim (city profile (opens in a new tab)).

The historic centre combines pedestrian streets, cafés and the distinctive façades of Inn-Salzach architecture around Max-Josefs-Platz. Riverside green space is close by, making the centre and parks easy to combine in an afternoon (Touristinfo walking guide (opens in a new tab)).

Universities here

Universities in Rosenheim, biggest first.

Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences gives the city its own student community. Check your programme’s campus before choosing housing: TH Rosenheim also teaches in Burghausen, Mühldorf am Inn and Traunstein (TH Rosenheim arrival guide (opens in a new tab)). Commuting to Munich is possible, but regional-train examples take around 45–52 minutes to München Hbf before any onward campus journey (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). Rosenheim is worth considering if you prefer a smaller study base with access to outdoor recreation.

Housing

Start looking early and pursue several options together. TH Rosenheim reports strong demand for affordable accommodation, while the Studierendenwerk’s February 2026 list gives an indicative wait of two semesters for shared-flat rooms in both Rosenheim residences (TH Rosenheim (opens in a new tab), rent and waiting-time list (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

Residence housing can keep costs down: the published Rosenheim I shared-room rents are below those at the same operator’s Agnes-/Adelheidstraße residence in Munich; this comparison does not establish a private-market saving (February 2026 price list (opens in a new tab)). TH Rosenheim currently lists a €97 semester contribution and, since summer semester 2026, €500 per semester in tuition for international students from third countries covered by its fee rules (university fees (opens in a new tab)). Exemptions apply, so check your circumstances (fee exemptions (opens in a new tab)). Eligible enrolled students can obtain the discounted Deutschlandticket for €43 per month, as listed in November 2026 (student ticket (opens in a new tab)).

Jobs & employers

Local options span manufacturing, commercial work and healthcare: Krones operates a production site, Gabor has its headquarters here, and RoMed operates the city hospital (Krones locations (opens in a new tab), Gabor locations (opens in a new tab), RoMed careers (opens in a new tab)). Krones and RoMed both describe routes for working students and internships; suitability depends on your subject and the individual vacancy (Krones student careers (opens in a new tab), RoMed (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Rosenheim’s local transport is part of the MVV network (city transport information (opens in a new tab)). Regional-train examples take approximately 45–52 minutes to München Hbf; check your actual date and allow additional time for a university elsewhere in Munich (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). For the local campus, use Rosenheim Hochschule station, followed by a short walk (TH arrival guide (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers local buses and regional trains, but not ordinary ICE, IC or EC journeys (ticket conditions (opens in a new tab)).

Nearest airport

Munich Airport (MUC)

TH Rosenheim recommends Munich for international arrivals. Allow roughly 1.5 hours to Rosenheim, using the S8 to München Ost and a regional train onward (university arrival guide (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold winters with regular frost, a gradual spring warm-up and pleasantly warm summers that can also be wet. Bring waterproof clothing as well as layers for cycling and walking. Summer offers lakeside swimming and outdoor concerts, while the Christmas market provides a winter meeting place (Happinger See (opens in a new tab), Sommerfestival (opens in a new tab), Christkindlmarkt (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Traditional festivities are a visible part of local life, particularly the Herbstfest with its beer tents and public programme (festival programme (opens in a new tab)). Everyday social life also has a student-facing side: the Asta-Kneipe hosts quizzes, bingo, parties and live music (Asta-Kneipe (opens in a new tab)).

For evenings out, expect a smaller-city choice of venues. The Asta programme and the summer concerts in Mangfallpark are useful starting points; if frequent large-city nights matter to you, consider the return journey before choosing Rosenheim as your base (Asta-Kneipe (opens in a new tab), Sommerfestival (opens in a new tab)).

Do not assume English alone will cover daily life or employment. As a practical target, work towards German B1 and beyond: TH Rosenheim’s language framework links this level to everyday life and internships, and its Language and Writing Center offers German courses (language framework (opens in a new tab), language centre (opens in a new tab)). Local student service jobs can explicitly require good spoken and written German (Black Fox World (opens in a new tab)). Check the language requirements of your individual degree separately.

Local food

  • Weißwurst with Breze

White sausages with a pretzel are a local breakfast option: Rosenheim butcher Lohberger makes Weißwurst and serves it at its Würstelstand (Lohberger (opens in a new tab)).

  • Flötzinger beer

A familiar Rosenheim beer name, served with Bavarian food at the city’s Flötzinger Bräustüberl (Bräustüberl (opens in a new tab)).
