About Schweinfurt

Schweinfurt is a city on the Main in Lower Franconia, with a strong industrial identity. Bearings, automotive components and engineering are part of its local economy (THWS (opens in a new tab)). This guide covers the independent city, rather than the surrounding Landkreis Schweinfurt.

There is also a substantial art scene: Museum Georg Schäfer focuses on German art centred on the nineteenth century, while the Kunsthalle presents modern and contemporary art in a former swimming pool (Museum Georg Schäfer (opens in a new tab), Kunsthalle Schweinfurt (opens in a new tab)).

Neighbourhoods

  • Innenstadt

The central neighbourhood extends towards the Main, with Schweinfurt Mitte station on its southern side (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

  • Musikerviertel

West of the city centre, this neighbourhood contains THWS Campus 1, making it worth considering when comparing accommodation with your teaching location (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Universities here

Universities in Schweinfurt, biggest first.

Schweinfurt is a teaching location of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), with an engineering-oriented academic environment and English-taught options (THWS (opens in a new tab)). It is a sensible choice for students who want their studies close to industrial employers. Würzburg is a realistic rail commute: DB’s published examples take approximately 22–38 minutes between the main stations, before travel to your actual campus (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). Check your programme’s teaching location before choosing a home.

Housing

Start searching early: THWS explicitly warns that residence places are limited, and the Studierendenwerk lists two residences in Schweinfurt (THWS accommodation (opens in a new tab), Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab)). These sources do not establish whether the wider private rental market is relaxed or tight. For incoming international full-time students, Marie-Curie-Platz is particularly relevant; Florian-Geyer-Straße is normally unavailable to that group (Marie-Curie-Platz (opens in a new tab), Florian-Geyer-Straße (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

For budgeting, Florian-Geyer-Straße lists monthly rents of €330–362 including advance operating costs, subject to eligibility and availability (Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab)). THWS currently lists a Schweinfurt semester contribution of €117.70 including the local semester ticket (THWS finances (opens in a new tab)). In 2026, the regular Deutschlandticket costs €63 monthly; NVM lists a €35.05 monthly upgrade for eligible Schweinfurt students who already hold their semester ticket (NVM (opens in a new tab)). Future applicants should also budget for THWS’s announced fees for new non-EU entrants from winter semester 2027/28: €750 per bachelor’s semester or €1,000 per master’s semester, plus €50 per application (THWS finances (opens in a new tab)).

Jobs & employers

Engineering and manufacturing are useful starting points for internship and student-job searches. THWS identifies local employers in bearings, automotive components and medical technology (THWS (opens in a new tab)). ZF offers routes including internships, working-student positions and holiday jobs, although availability depends on the location and recruitment round (ZF student careers (opens in a new tab)). THWS also points students towards its job exchange, the employment agency and local shop or café notices (THWS job guidance (opens in a new tab)).

Typical student jobs

  • Industrial internships and working-student positions: search the student-career routes at employers such as ZF and filter for Schweinfurt (ZF (opens in a new tab)).
  • Holiday work with industrial employers, subject to the current recruitment round (ZF (opens in a new tab)).
  • Café and hospitality work advertised through local notices and student job channels (THWS (opens in a new tab)).
  • Shop and grocery-store work; THWS recommends checking notices in these businesses (THWS (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Local buses are operated by Stadtwerke Schweinfurt. The THWS Schweinfurt semester ticket covers their services, but excludes trains and transport in Würzburg (Studierendenwerk ticket rules (opens in a new tab)). DB’s published direct regional connections take approximately 22–38 minutes to Würzburg and 28–41 minutes to Bamberg, station to station; check your actual travel date and allow additional campus travel time (DB to Würzburg (opens in a new tab), DB to Bamberg (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers local and regional public transport, including these regional trains, but not ordinary long-distance services (NVM (opens in a new tab)).

Plan your rail journey to Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof, then take the U2; the airport gives approximately 12 minutes for that final underground journey (Nuremberg Airport (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold, often grey winters, changeable spring weather and warm summers with occasional hot spells and rain. Layers and waterproof clothing are useful for walking or cycling to class. Autumn brings cooler evenings as the semester begins. The Wildpark remains an outdoor option throughout the year, while the museums provide indoor alternatives (Wildpark (opens in a new tab), Kunsthalle (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Schweinfurt combines industrial traditions with art museums and Franconian food culture. The Kunsthalle occupies the former Ernst-Sachs-Bad swimming pool, while the local Schlachtschüssel is a communal pork meal associated with gathering around the table (Kunsthalle (opens in a new tab), Schweinfurt tourism (opens in a new tab)).

The Stadtfest brings live music and evening entertainment into the centre in August (City event listing (opens in a new tab)). For everyday social life, joining university activities and checking individual venues’ programmes is a more useful starting point than expecting a large metropolitan nightlife scene.

English-taught study options provide an academic starting point, but THWS explicitly recommends German for finding accommodation, dealing with city hall, making friends and finding work. Its FAQ says several English-taught programmes require German A2 by the end of the second semester; check your own programme’s rules (THWS FAQ (opens in a new tab)). Keep learning beyond the minimum needed for your course. The traditional local dialect, Schweinfurterisch, belongs to East Franconian (Dialect background (opens in a new tab)).
