Eberswalde is the district's university town, with Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE) and Hochschule für Gesundheitsfachberufe Eberswalde. For HNEE students, living in town makes practical sense: its campuses are accessible by bicycle or bus. HNEE living guide (opens in a new tab) Commuting from Berlin is feasible, with published regional-train journeys between Berlin Hbf and Eberswalde Hbf taking about 40 minutes, before travel to your home and campus. Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab) Consider Barnim if you want local student connections and access to countryside, while keeping Berlin within reach.

Housing

Start early: HNEE describes finding accommodation in Eberswalde as potentially challenging. Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg separately warns that demand across its residences substantially exceeds supply and that applying does not guarantee a room. A residence room can keep your housing budget modest: Brandenburgisches Viertel lists monthly rents of €205–350 including utilities and electricity, checked November 2026. Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab) HNEE lists a standard semester contribution of €393.80 for winter semester 2026/27, including the Deutschlandsemesterticket; programme-specific exceptions and additional costs apply. HNEE student financing (opens in a new tab) Without a semester ticket, the regular Deutschlandticket currently costs €63 monthly. Jobs & employers

Verified local employment spans healthcare at GLG, crane manufacturing at Ardelt and university work at HNEE. These offer different routes into employment: healthcare posts commonly specify professional qualifications, while Ardelt also advertises working-student work. Expect cold, often grey winters with frosty periods, followed by brighter spring days and generally mild-to-warm summers with occasional hot spells. Bring a waterproof layer as well as winter clothing: summer is not reliably dry. For the student calendar, summer brings outdoor concerts at Chorin, while autumn and winter suit indoor social activities at the Eberswalde student club. Culture, language & food

For student evenings, start with Studentenclub Eberswalde in the town centre: its programme includes concerts, karaoke, quizzes and poetry slams. This is a useful picture of the local social scene—small venues and organised events. Brandenburg Tourism (opens in a new tab) Eberswalde also supports independent cultural projects such as Jazz in E., Guten Morgen Eberswalde and the Provinziale film festival. Local traditions differ between towns. Bernau's Hussitenfest brings historical costumes, markets and a procession into the streets, while Chorin's summer concert series uses the former monastery as its setting. Bernau Hussitenfest (opens in a new tab) Choriner Musiksommer (opens in a new tab)

HNEE provides information for international students in English and a Welcome Team that can help with German-language paperwork during arrival. Do not assume every everyday interaction will be available in English.
