About Frankfurt (Oder)

Frankfurt (Oder) faces the Polish town of Słubice across the Oder river. The Stadtbrücke connects their centres, making the border part of everyday city life (local tourism board (opens in a new tab)).

Its cultural landmarks include the brick Gothic Marienkirche and the Kleist-Museum, dedicated to the writer Heinrich von Kleist. Parks and the riverside provide places to spend time between classes (local tourism board (opens in a new tab)).

Neighbourhoods

Universities here

Universities in Frankfurt (Oder), biggest first.

European University Viadrina is the local university, with university facilities in the centre and West neighbourhood (WOWI (opens in a new tab)). Living locally is worth considering if you want to participate in campus activities without a substantial daily train journey. Berlin is reachable by RE1, but published services take roughly an hour to Berlin Ostbahnhof before any onward campus journey (DB departure timetable (opens in a new tab)). This is a good fit for someone who values a smaller university setting and student clubs, sports and cultural activities (Viadrina student life (opens in a new tab)).

Housing

Residence prices are modest, but do not assume a room will be easy to secure: the Studierendenwerk warns that demand across its locations substantially exceeds supply and an application does not guarantee accommodation (housing guidance (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

Housing is a useful starting point for your budget: August-Bebel-Straße accommodation is listed at €205–295 monthly including utilities (Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab)). Viadrina's standard winter 2026/27 semester contribution is €402.80 for first-year students and €396.80 for continuing students, including the Deutschlandsemesterticket; exemptions apply to some categories (Viadrina contribution breakdown (opens in a new tab)). Check your semester-ticket entitlement before buying separate transport. Budget additionally for food, insurance, communications and personal spending; these figures are not a complete monthly living-cost estimate.

Jobs & employers

University employment, microelectronics research and healthcare are concrete local job-search directions: Viadrina advertises student employment, IHP offers research assistant opportunities, and Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) recruits locally (Viadrina (opens in a new tab), IHP (opens in a new tab), Klinikum (opens in a new tab)). Match applications to your qualifications and language skills; an employer's presence does not mean that suitable student vacancies are always available.

Getting around

SVF operates the local bus and tram network (SVF (opens in a new tab)). RE1 journeys to Berlin Ostbahnhof take approximately 55–70 minutes on the published timetable; RB36 services to Königs Wusterhausen take around 90 minutes (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)). Allow additional time to reach a university campus. VBB flags major RE1 construction effects through 12 December 2026, so check your actual travel date (VBB RE1 (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams and regional trains such as RE1, but generally excludes IC, EC and ICE services (DB validity rules (opens in a new tab)).

Nearest airport

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

VBB's airport connection guide gives approximately 90 minutes between Frankfurt (Oder) and BER by public transport. Check the connection and engineering works before booking your journey (VBB airport guide (opens in a new tab)).

Autumn

Expect cold, often frosty winters and much brighter, warmer summers. Spring and autumn call for layers, while summer can bring both hot days and rain. Keep waterproof clothing alongside your winter coat. November also has an indoor cultural highlight in transVOCALE (festival organiser (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

The German-Polish setting shapes local culture: transVOCALE stages music across Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice (festival organiser (opens in a new tab)). For regular evenings out, Viadrina points students towards the Kleist Forum, Theater des Lachens, cabaret and cinema, alongside university sports (student-life guide (opens in a new tab)). Plan around particular events and student groups rather than expecting a large metropolitan nightlife circuit.

English can support study on an English-language programme, but it is sensible to learn German for daily life and a wider job search. As practical guidance rather than an admission rule, aim for conversational German around B1 and keep progressing. Viadrina offers German courses from A1 upwards (Language Centre (opens in a new tab)). Requirements vary by employer: IHP Solutions' student administration role explicitly asks for very good written German and good English (careers page (opens in a new tab)).

Local food

  • Pellkartoffeln mit Quark

Potatoes with quark belong to the broader Brandenburg food tradition highlighted by a local hotel, rather than being a dish unique to Frankfurt (Oder) (regional food guide (opens in a new tab)).

  • Pierogi

Polish dumplings are part of the neighbouring Słubice food scene; the twin-city tourism board specifically highlights homemade pierogi there (local food guide (opens in a new tab)).
