About Darmstadt-Dieburg district

Darmstadt-Dieburg surrounds the administratively separate city of Darmstadt. For students, that distinction matters: a district address and a Darmstadt campus can mean a daily journey between municipalities (district budget and regional context (opens in a new tab)).

The district mixes historic towns with countryside suited to walking and cycling. Dieburg, Groß-Umstadt, Babenhausen and Reinheim belong to the German Half-Timbered House Road network, while the Messel fossil site and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Naturepark offer geological history and outdoor destinations (district tourism (opens in a new tab)).

Universities here

Universities in Darmstadt-Dieburg district, biggest first.

The nearby university network includes Technical University of Darmstadt and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. The latter also has its media campus in Dieburg, inside the district (h_da campus (opens in a new tab)). Dieburg has direct regional trains to Darmstadt, but the journey from home to your teaching building will take longer than the station-to-station trip (Dieburg transport (opens in a new tab)). This is a sensible option if you prefer a smaller-town base and choose your address around your actual timetable.

Housing

Do not assume that accommodation outside Darmstadt is easy to secure. Hochschule Darmstadt explicitly warns that affordable student accommodation around its Dieburg campus is scarce and recommends starting early (h_da housing guidance (opens in a new tab)). The district’s own budget report also describes substantial pressure from high rents (district housing context (opens in a new tab)).

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

How to find a place

  • Search Dieburg and your preferred surrounding towns separately on WG-Gesucht, Immowelt and ImmoScout24; these are among the portals recommended by the media campus (h_da housing guidance (opens in a new tab)).
  • Contact Quartier56 directly about availability and room categories rather than relying on an older university brochure or an individual rental advertisement (Quartier56 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Use the university’s local residence list to investigate Camp 5 and stay+study in Dieburg as additional options (h_da residence list (opens in a new tab)).
  • Before signing, check the connection from the exact address to your campus, including your evening return journey. Dieburg’s transport page links rail and regional bus information (Dieburg transport (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living

A useful local housing benchmark is Quartier56’s published €370–€395 monthly single-room rent, including electricity, water and heating (operator’s room prices (opens in a new tab)). For transport, the standard Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month in 2026; first check whether your university already provides a semester ticket before buying a separate subscription (RMV (opens in a new tab)). Compare total housing and commuting costs rather than assuming the district will automatically be cheaper than Darmstadt.

Jobs & employers

Verified local employers span coatings, bicycle manufacturing and healthcare. DAW explicitly offers internships, working-student positions and thesis projects; Riese & Müller develops and assembles e-bikes in Mühltal, while the district hospitals operate in Groß-Umstadt and Jugenheim (DAW student opportunities (opens in a new tab), Riese & Müller careers (opens in a new tab), Kreiskliniken (opens in a new tab)). Treat these as places to monitor, not guarantees of a current vacancy.

Getting around

Local journeys use the RMV network. Dieburg is served by the RB75 towards Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg and the RB61 towards Dreieich and Frankfurt (Dieburg transport (opens in a new tab)). Allow roughly 20 minutes for a direct RB75 train from Dieburg to Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof, plus travel at either end; check current departures and engineering works (RMV timetable, July–December 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers ordinary local buses, trams and regional trains in second class, but not ICE, IC or EC services (RMV ticket conditions (opens in a new tab)).

Nearest airport

Frankfurt Airport

Reachable via Darmstadt’s AirLiner express bus, with a published journey time of about 30 minutes from Darmstadt to the airport. Add your journey into Darmstadt; the AirLiner requires a supplement (RMV AirLiner (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cool, often grey winters, warmer and brighter spring days, and summers that can include hot spells. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof clothing is useful for everyday commuting. Autumn brings Groß-Umstadt’s September wine festival, while winter social calendars include Dieburg’s carnival events (Winzerfest (opens in a new tab), Fastnacht calendar (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Local identity is expressed through town festivals and cultural venues: Dieburg has an active Fastnacht carnival calendar, Groß-Umstadt celebrates its wine producers, and Weiterstadt combines a municipal cinema with a summer short-film festival (Dieburg carnival (opens in a new tab), Winzerfest (opens in a new tab), Weiterstadt cinema (opens in a new tab)). For your social life, look at the programme in the particular town where you plan to live. If frequent late-night outings are a priority, test the return journey before committing to an address.

English-language university information is available, but plan to build practical German for housing enquiries, appointments and work. As a personal learning target, aim towards B1–B2 for greater independence; this is not a universal admission or employment requirement. Hochschule Darmstadt offers German-as-a-foreign-language courses, including provision for international students on English-language programmes (h_da language courses (opens in a new tab)).

Local food

  • Groß-Umstadt wine

Locally produced wine is central to the town’s Winzerfest, where producers serve their wines around the market square (Groß-Umstadt (opens in a new tab)).

  • Odenwälder Kochkäse

A traditional regional cheese speciality highlighted by the southern Hessian Milk and Cheese Route, which includes Darmstadt-Dieburg (regional food route (opens in a new tab)).
