About Wiesbaden
Wiesbaden lies at the foot of the Taunus hills, across the Rhine from Mainz. It is an independent city, so the areas to compare when choosing accommodation are neighbourhoods rather than separate district towns (background (opens in a new tab)).
Its spa heritage is visible around the Kurhaus, while Westend offers a more everyday mix of international restaurants and residential streets. Rheingauviertel/Hollerborn combines historic buildings, cafés and university facilities close to the centre (Kurhaus (opens in a new tab), Westend (opens in a new tab), Rheingauviertel (opens in a new tab)).
Neighbourhoods
Westend
A central neighbourhood with historic façades and international restaurants around Sedanplatz (Visit Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab)).
Rheingauviertel/Hollerborn
Adjoins the historic centre and contains Hochschule RheinMain facilities, residential streets and cafés around Wallufer Platz (Visit Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab)).
Biebrich
A riverside part of Wiesbaden associated with its baroque palace and landscaped palace park (Visit Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab)).
Universities here
Universities in Wiesbaden, biggest first.
Wiesbaden offers a local study base through Hochschule RheinMain, with accommodation options around its Kurt-Schumacher-Ring campus and elsewhere in the city (HSRM housing (opens in a new tab)). The nearby universities in Mainz also make commuting worth considering: the S8 connects the main stations, although you should check the complete journey to your teaching building before choosing a room (RMV timetable (opens in a new tab)). Wiesbaden may suit you if neighbourhood cafés, parks and access to the wider region matter more than living immediately beside every class.

Housing
Start searching before arrival. Hochschule RheinMain describes residence places as limited and highly sought after, and says that students must arrange their own accommodation. Apply for a residence while also searching for a shared flat, known as a WG (HSRM housing advice (opens in a new tab)).
The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.
How to find a place
- Apply directly to residence operators and join a waiting list if necessary; HSRM does not allocate accommodation itself (HSRM housing advice (opens in a new tab)).
- Use WG-Gesucht and VRM-Immo alongside the AStA housing exchange; all are linked from HSRM’s local housing guidance (HSRM housing advice (opens in a new tab)).
- Check housing notices in Building A, garden level, at Campus Kurt-Schumacher-Ring (HSRM housing (opens in a new tab)).
- Check the new Hollerbornstraße residence, but obtain confirmation of your move-in date: its operator lists completion in November 2026 and applications as open (Studierendenwerk Frankfurt (opens in a new tab)).

Max Kade Haus (opens in a new tab)
Studierendenwerk Frankfurt am Main

Studierendenwerk Frankfurt am Main

Cost of living
Use your actual housing offer as the starting point for a budget: Max Kade Haus lists total rents of €292–602 per month and a deposit of two months’ rent (Studierendenwerk Frankfurt (opens in a new tab)). Hochschule RheinMain’s winter 2026/27 semester contribution is €396.91, including the student Deutschlandticket (HSRM (opens in a new tab)). For someone without an included student ticket, the standard Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month in 2026 (RMV (opens in a new tab)). These figures exclude groceries, health insurance and personal spending; they do not establish that Wiesbaden is cheaper than Frankfurt.

These are station-to-station examples, and construction can alter services (RMV timetable (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, S-Bahn and regional trains in second class, but generally excludes ICE, IC and EC services (RMV ticket rules (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cool, often grey winters, a gradual spring warm-up and summers with occasional hot days. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof layers are useful for the daily commute. Summer is a good time to explore the Neroberg’s outdoor recreation areas, while the Sternschnuppenmarkt provides an evening outing towards the end of the autumn term (Neroberg (opens in a new tab), Christmas market (opens in a new tab)).
Culture, language & food
Wiesbaden’s spa-city identity is still visible in the Kurhaus, which hosts concerts and formal events. For an informal evening, Westend’s restaurants around Sedanplatz and the cafés and pubs of Rheingauviertel offer neighbourhood places to meet friends (Kurhaus (opens in a new tab), Westend (opens in a new tab), Rheingauviertel (opens in a new tab)).
Regional wine culture is part of the city’s public life: the Rheingauer Weinwoche brings wine producers into the central squares each summer (city festival (opens in a new tab)).
English can be your teaching language on selected HSRM programmes, but most programmes are taught in German. The university also recommends learning German for everyday life and employment, even when studying entirely in English (HSRM international applicants (opens in a new tab)). As a practical learning target, aim towards B1–B2 for independent daily life; this is advice, not an admission rule. German-taught HSRM programmes generally require B2 when applying and accepted C1-level evidence for enrolment (HSRM language requirements (opens in a new tab)).
