Universities here

Universities in Hildesheim district, biggest first.

The University of Hildesheim and HAWK’s Hildesheim campus make the city a practical base for studying locally. HAWK’s other campus towns, Holzminden and Göttingen, are separate locations, so check where your programme is taught. (HAWK factsheet (opens in a new tab)) Choose housing around your actual teaching site: the university’s main campus is on Marienburger Höhe, while the Kulturcampus Domäne Marienburg has a separate journey involving a bus and a walk. (Campus overview (opens in a new tab), Domäne directions (opens in a new tab)) This is a good option to consider if you want university life with countryside nearby; compare complete door-to-door journeys before choosing an outlying town.

Housing

University housing guidance describes Hildesheim as comparatively affordable and points students towards shared flats, residences and local housing companies. That does not mean a room is guaranteed: HAWK explicitly cautions against assuming accommodation is secured. Apply for a residence while also searching privately. Cost of living

HAWK’s May 2026 international factsheet recommends budgeting at least approximately €1,000 per month for living costs. (HAWK (opens in a new tab)) Accommodation type makes a substantial difference: Blauer Kamp lists apartments at €403.50–€674.50 monthly including operating costs, checked November 2026. (Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab)) The University of Hildesheim’s winter 2026/27 semester contribution is €469.85, including the Deutschlandsemesterticket and Kulturticket; budget for this semester payment separately. (University fees (opens in a new tab)) University guidance describes local housing as comparatively affordable, but no current like-for-like comparison with a particular large city was verified. Jobs & employers

Local employment includes engineering research and manufacturing at Bosch, paper manufacturing in Alfeld and hospital services in Hildesheim. These provide directions for internship searches, without implying that each employer currently has student vacancies. (Bosch (opens in a new tab), Alfeld town website (opens in a new tab), Helios (opens in a new tab)) For part-time work, the university’s careers board provides concrete local examples in education, science outreach and personal assistance. Getting around

SVHI city buses and RVHI regional buses serve Hildesheim and its surrounding communities. (Local transport overview (opens in a new tab)) The regular RE10 timetable connects Hildesheim Hbf with Hannover Hbf in about half an hour via Sarstedt; engineering works can change journeys, so check your travel date. (erixx timetable (opens in a new tab), Service updates (opens in a new tab)) The Deutschlandticket covers participating local buses and regional trains, including RE and S-Bahn services, but generally excludes ICE, IC and EC trains. (DB ticket rules (opens in a new tab)) For village housing, compare evening and weekend connections as well as the morning journey.

Nearest airport

Hannover Airport (HAJ)

For scheduled passenger flights, travel via Hannover Hbf and change to the S5. The airport gives approximately 18 minutes for the Hannover Hbf–airport section; allow additional time for the connection from Hildesheim. Expect cool, often grey winters, changeable spring and autumn weather, and generally mild summers with occasional hot days. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof clothing is useful for a walking or cycling commute. The district’s river routes and walking trails offer options for brighter days, while the Christmas market provides a seasonal outing during the darker part of the winter semester. Culture, language & food

The region’s identity brings together Hildesheim’s church heritage, Alfeld’s industrial architecture and Bad Salzdetfurth’s spa tradition. (District tourism (opens in a new tab)) For evenings out, start with individual venues and their programmes: Kulturfabrik Löseke’s volunteer-run Club VEB hosts music across several genres and offers opportunities to get involved behind the scenes. This is a useful way to build a social routine beyond your course. (Club VEB (opens in a new tab))

English can support your academic start where your chosen courses are taught in English, but check the programme rather than assuming an entire institution operates in English. HAWK describes teaching as generally German, with selected English offerings. (HAWK factsheet (opens in a new tab)) As practical preparation, aim for conversational German for housing, appointments and work. The University of Hildesheim offers German courses and language tandems for exchange students. (International Office (opens in a new tab))
