About Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district
Mecklenburgische Seenplatte is an inland district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, bordering Brandenburg to the south. Neubrandenburg is its administrative centre; Waren (Müritz), Neustrelitz and Demmin are other important towns. Lakes, woodland and the Müritz National Park shape its landscape (district overview (opens in a new tab)).
The towns offer quite different surroundings: Neubrandenburg has brick Gothic fortifications, Neustrelitz has a planned baroque centre, and Demmin sits where the Peene, Trebel and Tollense rivers meet. Choose your home around your campus and daily journey, rather than treating the whole district as one student town (Neubrandenburg (opens in a new tab), Neustrelitz (opens in a new tab), Demmin (opens in a new tab)).
Main towns
Neubrandenburg
The university town, known for its surviving city walls, gates and Konzertkirche (tourist information (opens in a new tab)).
Waren (Müritz)
Home to the Müritzeum, with freshwater aquariums and exhibitions about the region’s natural environment (Müritzeum (opens in a new tab)).
Neustrelitz
A former ducal residence with a baroque street plan, theatre and harbour on the Zierker See (city portrait (opens in a new tab)).
Demmin
A Hanseatic town at the meeting of the Peene, Trebel and Tollense rivers (regional tourism board (opens in a new tab)).

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences is the district’s university, making Neubrandenburg the natural starting point for a housing search. Living in Neustrelitz is a possible commuting option: published DB connections take approximately 26–28 minutes to Neubrandenburg station, before the onward journey to campus (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). Other nearby university towns include Greifswald, Güstrow and Rostock, but assess their actual campus journeys separately. This district is a good option to consider if you value access to lakes and woodland alongside campus life.

Housing
There are low-priced student housing options in Neubrandenburg, but low advertised rents do not establish that rooms are readily available. The campus residence operator currently warns of a closure during renovation of House 1; confirm availability directly (Studierendenwerk Greifswald (opens in a new tab)). NEUWOGES also advertises housing specifically for young people (JungesWohnen (opens in a new tab)).
The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.
How to find a place
- Use the Studierendenwerk’s online application and ask its Neubrandenburg housing team how renovation affects your intended arrival date (housing application (opens in a new tab)).
- Check NEUWOGES JungesWohnen and ask for the full monthly cost and campus connection of each available apartment (NEUWOGES (opens in a new tab)).
- Follow the International Office’s arrival guidance and coordinate accommodation and key collection before travelling; its guidance notes that the residence administration is not staffed at weekends (university arrival information (opens in a new tab)).
- Before accepting a room outside walking distance, check both the normal and holiday bus timetables for your class times (Neubrandenburg bus timetables (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living
Useful budget anchors are the university’s €120 semester contribution for timely re-registration for winter semester 2026/27, comprising Studierendenwerk and student-body contributions (university (opens in a new tab)), and the standard Deutschlandticket at €63 per month through December 2026, rising to €66.80 in January 2027 (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). Budget for transport separately: the university’s published contribution breakdown contains no transport-ticket component. NEUWOGES advertises a small apartment example from €252 total monthly rent, checked November 2026; confirm what utilities are included (NEUWOGES (opens in a new tab)). These provide concrete low-cost housing leads, but no verified comparison supports a percentage saving against a large German city.
Jobs & employers
Local opportunities span manufacturing, healthcare and tourism: Webasto produces vehicle heating systems in Neubrandenburg, the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Klinikum offers practical placements, and Fleesensee hotel businesses recruit in Göhren-Lebbin and Waren. For students, distinguish flexible paid work from placements required by a particular training programme (Webasto (opens in a new tab), hospital placements (opens in a new tab), Fleesensee careers (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around
The RE5 connects Berlin with Neustrelitz and branches towards Rostock via Waren and towards Stralsund via Neubrandenburg; complementary RE50 and RE51 services strengthen the regional connections (VBB (opens in a new tab)). DB publishes direct Neubrandenburg–Berlin Hbf journeys of approximately 1 hour 40–43 minutes; check your travel date for changes (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)). MVVG regional buses include the datBus corridor linking Neubrandenburg, Waren, Röbel and Rechlin (regional transport information (opens in a new tab)). Neubrandenburg also has local buses; departures marked R require advance telephone booking (local timetable (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers ordinary local buses and regional trains, but generally excludes ICE, IC and EC services (ticket validity (opens in a new tab)). For rural housing, check the last return journey and weekend service before committing.
- Main stations
- Neubrandenburg — regional services on the Stralsund–Neustrelitz–Berlin corridor (VBB (opens in a new tab)).
- Neustrelitz Hbf — interchange for the Rostock and Stralsund branches towards Berlin (VBB (opens in a new tab)).
- Waren (Müritz) — regional services on the Rostock–Neustrelitz–Berlin corridor (VBB (opens in a new tab)).
- Nearest airport
Rostock–Laage (RLG) — regional passenger-airport option
Airport choice depends on your town and flight route; this is not a verified nearest-airport designation for every address in the district. Rostock–Laage has road access via the A19/A20 and a limited published destination list, so check flight availability before planning the transfer (airport access (opens in a new tab), destinations (opens in a new tab)).
Weather & seasons

Autumn

3.6 h sun a day
Expect cold, often dull winters, brighter spring days and generally mild summers, with rain possible throughout the year. Bring waterproof layers and warm clothing rather than planning around dependable snow or constant summer heat. Spring and summer are useful seasons for exploring the district’s walking, cycling and boating routes; winter is a good time to make use of indoor cultural venues (Neustrelitz visitor information (opens in a new tab)).
Culture, language & food
Neubrandenburg’s cultural venues include the Konzertkirche, the Haus der Kultur und Bildung and Latücht for film and events. Neustrelitz adds theatre, music theatre and the Alte Kachelofenfabrik cultural centre. For student social life, plan around campus activities and venue programmes rather than assuming a large late-night scene (Neubrandenburg culture (opens in a new tab), Neustrelitz (opens in a new tab)).
Low German, or Plattdeutsch, is part of the region’s literary heritage. Fritz Reuter’s work connects the language with everyday life in Mecklenburg; the Fritz-Reuter-Literaturmuseum explains that tradition (museum (opens in a new tab)).
Use the university’s English-language information to prepare, but plan to use German for everyday administration, housing and job searches. As a practical learning target, B1–B2 German should make daily life easier; this is separate from admission requirements. The university’s general admissions page requires at least B2 German for German-taught programmes and specifies accepted certificates, so check your programme carefully (admissions requirements (opens in a new tab)). Plattdeutsch belongs to the region’s cultural heritage; focus first on standard German (Fritz-Reuter-Literaturmuseum (opens in a new tab)).
Local food
