About Vorpommern-Rügen district

Stralsund’s historic centre shares UNESCO World Heritage status with Wismar, reflecting its importance as a Hanseatic trading town. Elsewhere, the landscape is the main attraction: Jasmund has chalk cliffs and protected beech forest, while the western coast has beaches, woods and shallow coastal lagoons called Bodden. Universities in Vorpommern-Rügen district, biggest first.

Stralsund University of Applied Sciences is the district’s local university, making Stralsund the practical starting point for a housing search; Holzhausen offers accommodation directly on campus. (Studierendenwerk (opens in a new tab)) Greifswald and Rostock are nearby university alternatives: direct regional trains from Stralsund take approximately 22 minutes to Greifswald and around an hour to Rostock, before onward travel to campus. (DB: Greifswald (opens in a new tab), DB: Rostock (opens in a new tab)) This is worth considering if you want coastal surroundings and a campus community; check the complete journey before choosing an island or rural address.

Housing

Stralsund has inexpensive student accommodation, but availability should not be assumed. The university describes local housing as comparatively affordable while warning that campus rooms face strong demand and limited capacity. Apply early and keep a private-room search running alongside your residence application. (University housing guidance (opens in a new tab))

Cost of living

Accommodation is the clearest potential saving: Holzhausen lists single rooms at €236–254 monthly including utilities and internet, while the private Langenstraße residence lists shared-flat rooms at €350–450 with utilities and Wi-Fi included; both pages were checked in November 2026. (Holzhausen (opens in a new tab), Langenstraße (opens in a new tab)) VVR lists the standard Deutschlandticket at €63 per month for 2026. (VVR (opens in a new tab)) These are useful budget anchors, but they do not establish a complete monthly budget or a reliable comparison of food and leisure costs with larger cities.

Jobs & employers

Tourism is important across the islands and coast, while Stralsund also has healthcare, metalworking and brewing employers. (District background (opens in a new tab), Helios (opens in a new tab), Ostseestaal (opens in a new tab), Störtebeker (opens in a new tab)) For degree-related experience, Ostseestaal explicitly welcomes unsolicited working-student and internship applications. Getting around

VVR operates buses in Stralsund and throughout the district, with Stralsund Hauptbahnhof providing the main rail interchange. (Local transport overview (opens in a new tab)) Direct regional trains take about 22 minutes from Stralsund to Greifswald and approximately 59–62 minutes to Rostock; allow additional time for campus connections and check your travel date for engineering works. (DB: Greifswald (opens in a new tab), DB: Rostock (opens in a new tab)) The Deutschlandticket covers local buses and regional trains. VVR also confirms an exception allowing it on IC/ICE services between Rostock and Stralsund, plus the Schaprode–Hiddensee ferry; do not assume other long-distance trains or excursion boats are included. Expect cool winters with limited sunshine, a gradual spring warm-up and generally mild summers rather than dependable heat. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof layers are useful for everyday travel. Summer brings outdoor events such as the Ralswiek theatre season and Stralsund’s July festivals; in winter, plan more indoor study and social time. Culture, language & food

Hanseatic history remains visible in Stralsund’s brick churches, merchants’ houses and town hall. Low German, or Plattdeutsch, is also part of the region’s cultural heritage, including an established amateur theatre tradition in Stralsund. (Hanse city profile (opens in a new tab), State cultural information (opens in a new tab))

For student evenings, Knuts Bar in the old town is a concrete starting point: it is run by the Carpe Diem student association. Think in terms of a local student community and organised events when choosing where to live. (Student association (opens in a new tab))

English-language arrival guidance is available from the university, and Holzhausen lists an English-speaking residence tutor. (University guidance (opens in a new tab), Residence support (opens in a new tab)) Do not assume every landlord, workplace or public-office interaction can be handled in English: aim for practical conversational German, with B1 a useful personal target rather than a universal requirement. The university offers German courses, with access depending on programme and capacity. (Language centre (opens in a new tab)) Plattdeutsch is a regional language with a local cultural presence; standard German should be your learning priority.
