About Düren district

Düren district lies in the western Rhineland between Aachen and Cologne. Its landscape changes from the open Jülich-Zülpich plain in the north to the Eifel in the south, with the River Rur running through it (geographical background (opens in a new tab)).

Düren is the district's administrative and shopping centre, with a townscape shaped by post-war rebuilding. Jülich combines university life with research, while the southern towns offer access to castles and countryside (Kreis Düren (opens in a new tab), Forschungszentrum Jülich (opens in a new tab), district tourism (opens in a new tab)).

Universities here

Universities in Düren district, biggest first.

FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences has a campus in Jülich; Aachen also offers FH Aachen and RWTH, with further university options in Cologne. For classes in Jülich, living near the campus is the simplest starting point: FH's arrival guide identifies Jülich Nord as the rail stop, followed by roughly a ten-minute walk (FH Aachen guide (opens in a new tab)). Düren is worth considering for commuting towards Aachen or Cologne because of its direct rail connections, but compare the complete journey to your teaching building before choosing accommodation (Stadt Düren (opens in a new tab)). This district is a sensible shortlist for students who value campus access and countryside over living in a large university city.

Housing

Do not assume that a smaller university town means immediately available accommodation. FH Aachen explicitly warns of long residence waiting lists and recommends applying early. Search for private rooms alongside your residence application (FH Aachen housing advice (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living

FH Aachen's current guidance suggests budgeting approximately €1,000–1,100 per month for life in Aachen or Jülich, depending on personal circumstances; treat this as planning guidance rather than a measured district average (FH Aachen (opens in a new tab)). Its winter semester 2026/27 contribution is €384.60 and includes the student Deutschlandticket (semester contribution (opens in a new tab)). Accommodation choice and the need for a car will matter more to your individual budget than an unsupported claim that the whole district is cheap.

Jobs & employers

Research and manufacturing provide distinct employment routes: Forschungszentrum Jülich offers student work and placements, SIG manufactures packaging in Linnich, and Metsä operates a greaseproof-paper mill in Düren. Research roles are especially relevant if your degree matches the project; an employer's local presence does not guarantee a suitable student vacancy (Forschungszentrum Jülich (opens in a new tab), Stadt Linnich (opens in a new tab), Metsä (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Düren is the main interchange: regional trains connect towards Aachen and Cologne, while Rurtalbahn links it with Jülich and Linnich to the north and Heimbach to the south; Rurtalbus provides local bus services (Stadt Düren (opens in a new tab)). Allow approximately 25–30 minutes station-to-station from Düren to Aachen Hbf or Köln Hbf on suitable direct regional services (DB to Aachen (opens in a new tab), DB to Cologne (opens in a new tab)). The published 2026 timetable gives about 22 minutes from Düren to Jülich Nord; campus is then roughly a ten-minute walk (Rurtalbahn timetable (opens in a new tab), FH guide (opens in a new tab)). Check current connections and engineering notices before travelling. The Deutschlandticket covers participating local buses and regional trains, but generally excludes ICE, IC and EC services (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)).

Main stations
Nearest airport

Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST), using Jülich as the reference point

Jülich's official travel page lists Maastricht Aachen at approximately 63 km, Cologne Bonn at 70 km and Düsseldorf at 72 km. The closest useful airport depends on your town and flight route (Stadt Jülich (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cool, often damp winters and generally mild summers, with occasional hotter days. Waterproof clothing is useful throughout the year, especially if you walk or cycle to campus. Summer brings Annakirmes, while the carnival calendar provides winter outings (Annakirmes (opens in a new tab), carnival programme (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Carnival is an organised part of local life, with neighbourhood societies, stage events and Düren's Orchideensonntag parade. The local organising committee publishes the current season's programme (Festkomitee Dürener Karneval (opens in a new tab)).

For evenings out, start with the actual programmes at Düren's Theater im Haus der Stadt and Komm-Zentrum rather than assuming a large student club scene. Both are established local cultural venues (Kreis Düren (opens in a new tab)).

Check the teaching language of your particular programme rather than assuming that every course is available in English. For housing enquiries, appointments and work, aim for conversational German; B1 is a useful personal target, not a universal admission requirement. FH Aachen offers German courses for exchange students before and during the semester, including in Jülich (FH Aachen (opens in a new tab)).
