About Ahrweiler district

Ahrweiler combines the Rhine corridor, the wine-growing Ahr valley and Eifel countryside. Its landscape varies considerably: riverside settlements and vineyards give way to wooded hills and volcanic scenery around Laacher See. (District administration (opens in a new tab))

For students, Remagen is the practical starting point because it hosts RheinAhrCampus. Elsewhere, Ahrweiler’s walled old town and the lake beside Maria Laach offer very different settings for a day out. Choose your home around the campus journey you will actually make. Universities here

Universities in Ahrweiler district, biggest first.

The University of Applied Sciences Koblenz has its RheinAhrCampus in Remagen, with an international student community and organised student activities. (University handbook (opens in a new tab)) Nearby university options include Bonn and Rheinbach. Remagen is worth prioritising for campus convenience and trains towards Bonn; from other parts of the district, compare the complete bus-and-train journey before choosing accommodation. VRM lists direct bus links from the Ahr valley towards Rheinbach. (DB timetable (opens in a new tab), VRM routes (opens in a new tab)) This setting is likely to suit someone who values countryside and a smaller campus community.

Housing

Remagen has dedicated student accommodation, but an inexpensive room is not guaranteed: the university’s exchange handbook warns that dorm places are limited and recommends applying early. A shared flat is another option. (University handbook (opens in a new tab))

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

Cost of living

Campus accommodation gives a useful budgeting anchor: the listed deposit at both Remagen residences is €800, so allow for an upfront payment as well as rent. (Von-Cramm-Straße 5–7 (opens in a new tab), Von-Cramm-Straße 10 (opens in a new tab)) The regular Deutschlandticket costs €63 monthly through December 2026; DB lists €66.80 from January 2027. (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab)) Check your university’s semester-ticket arrangements before buying a separate subscription: the Studierendenwerk describes a Deutschlandsemesterticket component for Remagen students. (Semester contributions (opens in a new tab)) No reliable local comparison supports promising that all living costs are lower than in Bonn or Cologne.

Jobs & employers

There are several distinct employment centres: HARIBO’s confectionery business in Grafschaft, FIEGE’s local logistics operation and HEUFT’s inspection-technology business in Burgbrohl. (HARIBO (opens in a new tab), FIEGE (opens in a new tab), HEUFT (opens in a new tab)) Hospitality is another practical search area: Hotel Rodderhof in Ahrweiler advertises part-time roles. Check working hours and the commute before assuming a vacancy fits around lectures. (Hotel careers (opens in a new tab))

Getting around

Remagen is the key interchange between the Rhine corridor and the Ahr valley. Published regional schedules put Remagen–Bonn Hbf at roughly 18–20 minutes and Remagen–Koblenz Hbf at roughly 26–34 minutes, before onward travel to a campus. (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)) RB30 and RB32 serve the Ahr valley; the tourism board’s current notice says through journeys towards Bonn and Koblenz require changes at Remagen during 2026 works. Check the day’s connection. (Ahrtal transport update (opens in a new tab)) VRM lists local buses, including routes towards Rheinbach. (VRM (opens in a new tab)) The Deutschlandticket covers ordinary local buses and regional trains, but generally not IC, EC or ICE services. (Deutsche Bahn (opens in a new tab))

Nearest airport

Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN)

A practical arrival airport for Remagen: the university recommends the SB60 bus to Bonn Hbf, followed by a regional train to Remagen. Check connections for your arrival date. (University arrival guide (opens in a new tab))

Expect chilly, sometimes frosty winters, changeable spring weather and generally mild-to-warm summers with occasional hot days. Bring waterproof layers throughout the year. Autumn offers a particularly clear local rhythm: September’s Ahrweiler wine celebrations are followed by October’s Klangwelle evenings. (Weinwochen (opens in a new tab), Klangwelle (opens in a new tab))

Culture, language & food

Wine-growing and local festivals are prominent parts of Ahr valley life. Ahrweiler’s Weinwochen bring celebrations into the old town, while Sinzig’s Barbarossamarkt centres on historical crafts and medieval-themed activities around the castle. (Weinwochen (opens in a new tab), Barbarossamarkt (opens in a new tab))

For student social life, start with campus organisations: the RheinAhrCampus handbook describes AStA parties and international activities. Think in terms of organised events and a smaller social circle when deciding whether this setting suits you. (University handbook (opens in a new tab))

English can help within RheinAhrCampus’s international community; its exchange handbook also describes German-language classes. (University handbook (opens in a new tab)) For housing, administration and customer-facing work, aim for practical conversational German; B1–B2 is a useful personal target, not a universal admission or employment requirement. Traditional local dialects include both Ripuarian and Moselle Franconian varieties. (District dialect history (opens in a new tab))
