About Vulkaneifel district

Vulkaneifel is a rural district in Rhineland-Palatinate’s Eifel region. Around Daun, Gerolstein and Hillesheim, volcanic craters and mineral springs shape the landscape of the Vulkaneifel UNESCO Global Geopark. Its characteristic maars formed when rising magma encountered groundwater (German UNESCO Commission (opens in a new tab)).

The towns offer different starting points: Daun has the Eifel-Vulkanmuseum, Gerolstein lies on the Cologne–Trier railway, and Hillesheim combines medieval town walls with crime-fiction attractions. For a prospective student, the important distinction is between living near a railway station and needing a connecting village bus (district museum (opens in a new tab), DB vareo (opens in a new tab), Hillesheim (opens in a new tab)).

There is no university in Vulkaneifel. Nearby options include Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in Rheinbach, Hochschule Koblenz’s Remagen campus, Hochschule Trier, Universität Trier and Alanus Hochschule in Alfter. Treat these as separate commuting decisions: the railway serves Gerolstein, while Daun connects to it by bus; test the complete journey to your actual campus before choosing accommodation (DB vareo (opens in a new tab), regional bus network (opens in a new tab)). Local work placements or dual study can be a better reason to live here: Gerolsteiner offers routes for students, and the district administration advertises apprenticeships and dual-study programmes (Gerolsteiner (opens in a new tab), district careers (opens in a new tab)). This is worth considering if you prefer countryside and have a workable study or employment arrangement; compare any apparent rent saving with transport costs and time.

Housing

Start with private rentals. Daun has dedicated apartment-search pages and a municipal property portal covering the surrounding Verbandsgemeinde, but these do not establish whether suitable student housing is plentiful or scarce (municipal property portal (opens in a new tab), ImmoScout24 (opens in a new tab)). No sufficiently reliable local student-rent benchmark was verified, so an average would be misleading.

How to find a place

  • Search the Verbandsgemeinde Daun municipal property portal for apartments and houses; distinguish Daun town from surrounding villages (KIP (opens in a new tab)).
  • Use ImmoScout24’s Daun overview and save a search with your maximum total budget; check heating, electricity and furnishing separately (ImmoScout24 (opens in a new tab)).
  • If moving for a Gerolsteiner placement, ask its recruitment team about accommodation assistance: the company says it can provide nearby property offers, usually furnished holiday apartments (Gerolsteiner application FAQ (opens in a new tab)).
  • Check the journey from each property before arranging a viewing. VRT RufBus services require booking at least one hour before departure (VRT RufBus (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living

Budget for housing and mobility together. The standard Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month as listed in November 2026 and covers local buses, second-class regional trains and VRT RufBus services; it does not cover ICE or Intercity trains (VRT ticket FAQ (opens in a new tab)). One inexpensive local cultural option is the Eifel-Vulkanmuseum’s listed €2 student admission, subject to its seasonal opening arrangements (district museum (opens in a new tab)). A reliable comparison with big-city living costs was not established: assess actual warm rent, heating and any car costs before assuming the rural address will be cheaper.

Jobs & employers

Verified local opportunities span mineral water, consumer electronics, public administration and hospitality. Gerolsteiner explicitly recruits students, TechniSat offers training and internships associated with its Daun location, and hotels advertise service and housekeeping work. These are useful search directions, rather than a guarantee of vacancies or English-speaking roles (Gerolsteiner (opens in a new tab), TechniSat (opens in a new tab), district administration (opens in a new tab), Grafenwald (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Gerolstein and Jünkerath are useful railway access points on the Eifel line. Selected weekday RE12 services in the published 2026 timetable take about 65 minutes from Gerolstein to Trier Hbf and about 95 minutes from Gerolstein to Cologne Hbf; these are station-to-station examples, not campus travel times (RE12 timetable (opens in a new tab)). RegioBus 700 links Gerolstein, Daun, Ulmen and Cochem, with an hourly daily service described by the regional authority (bus network (opens in a new tab)). Some village journeys use RufBus services that must be booked at least an hour ahead; the Deutschlandticket is accepted (VRT RufBus (opens in a new tab)). Check every intended commute against current engineering notices: Eifel-line electrification causes replacement buses on affected sections, including weekend work between Kall and Euskirchen during November 2026 (DB project updates (opens in a new tab)).

Main stations
Nearest airport

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN)

The nearest airport to Daun according to its travel guide; the closest option can differ elsewhere in the district (Daun travel guide (opens in a new tab)). As a local distance reference, Grafenwald in Daun-Gemünden lists Hahn at 65 km (hotel directions (opens in a new tab)). The airport publishes bus connections to Bullay; check onward connections separately (Hahn Airport (opens in a new tab)).

Weather & seasons

Expect cool winters with frequent frost, mild summers and rain in every season. Waterproof shoes and layers are sensible for walking to transport stops as well as exploring the countryside. Summer brings local fairs, while winter requires more attention to attraction opening times: Daun’s volcano museum currently operates a winter break with exceptions for selected visits (Gerolsteiner Kirmes (opens in a new tab), museum opening information (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Crime fiction is a distinctive part of Hillesheim’s identity, with its Krimihaus and themed walks. Local clubs are another potential way to meet people: the town’s own guide highlights its Vereinsleben, or association life (Hillesheim (opens in a new tab)).

Traditional Kirmes fairs provide occasions for live music and socialising: Gerolstein’s recent programme included a riverside stage, fairground rides and markets (Gerolsteiner Land (opens in a new tab)). With no university in the district, choose it for a quieter routine rather than expecting an established campus nightlife scene.

For planning purposes, do not assume that English will be available for every rental enquiry, appointment or workplace conversation. Aim for practical German around B1–B2 as a personal preparation goal, and check each course or employer’s actual requirements. Local Eifel dialects vary between places; the wider region includes Moselle Franconian and Ripuarian varieties, but learning standard German is the useful priority (Eifel dialect overview (opens in a new tab)).

Studying in Vulkaneifel district: FAQ

Is Vulkaneifel a good place to live as a student?

It is worth considering for a local placement, dual-study arrangement or a preference for rural living. Gerolsteiner offers student entry routes, but check your campus journey carefully because engineering work affects the Eifel railway (Gerolsteiner careers (opens in a new tab), DB updates (opens in a new tab)).

Is there a university in Vulkaneifel?

There is no university in the district. Nearby university locations include Rheinbach, Remagen, Trier and Alfter; the best choice depends on your programme and its actual campus.

How do I get from Vulkaneifel to Trier?

Gerolstein has regional rail connections to Trier; selected weekday RE12 journeys in the 2026 timetable take about 65 minutes to Trier Hbf (RE12 timetable (opens in a new tab)). Add your journey to Gerolstein and the onward trip to campus, and check current construction changes (DB updates (opens in a new tab)).

Is Vulkaneifel expensive for students?

A reliable local student-rent average was not verified, so compare actual accommodation offers rather than relying on a district-wide estimate. The standard Deutschlandticket is listed at €63 per month in November 2026, but your budget should also account for heating and any car use (VRT (opens in a new tab)).

What jobs can students find in Vulkaneifel?

Verified examples include hotel evening service and housekeeping minijobs, plus working-student and internship routes at Gerolsteiner. Availability and language requirements depend on the position (Grafenwald careers (opens in a new tab), Gerolsteiner careers (opens in a new tab)).

Can I live in Vulkaneifel without a car?

It can work if your home, classes and job fit the train and bus network. Check your evening return journey and whether any connection is a RufBus, which requires booking at least one hour ahead (VRT RufBus (opens in a new tab)).
