About Worms

Worms lies on the Rhine between Mainz and Mannheim. Its historic centre combines a Romanesque cathedral, monuments to the Reformation and reminders of the Nibelungen legends. (Worms tourism (opens in a new tab), City sights (opens in a new tab))

This district is the city itself, including neighbourhoods such as Hochheim and Neuhausen. Several outer quarters retain a village character, with local associations and wine festivals. Worms also preserves major Jewish heritage: the synagogue complex and Heiliger Sand cemetery belong to the UNESCO-listed SchUM sites. Universities here

Universities in Worms, biggest first.

Worms University of Applied Sciences gives the city its own campus community, while Mannheim and Ludwigshafen offer additional university options. Campus accommodation can keep everyday journeys short; commuting elsewhere requires allowing for travel beyond the destination station. Representative regional services take about 22–27 minutes to Mannheim Hbf and 15–20 minutes to Ludwigshafen Hbf. Worms is worth considering if you prefer living near your classes while keeping neighbouring university cities within reach. Housing

Start searching early: the International Center explicitly says its accommodation supply is limited and allocated first come, first served. Its furnished shared-flat rooms are advertised at approximately €350–650 monthly including utilities; Studierendenwerk accommodation provides lower-priced alternatives. This does not establish that the wider private rental market is relaxed. (International Center housing (opens in a new tab), Studierendenwerk residence (opens in a new tab))

Cost of living

Accommodation is the clearest verified budget variable: Erenburgerstraße/Hochheimer Straße lists €240–270 monthly including utilities and internet, while ordinary apartments at Bebelstraße 22 are listed at €325 including utilities. (Erenburgerstraße (opens in a new tab), Bebelstraße (opens in a new tab)) Hochschule Worms currently lists a re-registration semester contribution of €155.70, checked November 2026. (University fees (opens in a new tab)) The regular Deutschlandticket costs €63 monthly in 2026. Budget transport separately unless your university confirms another entitlement. Jobs & employers

Plastics, chemicals and logistics are useful sectors to investigate: RENOLIT has its headquarters in Worms, Röhm operates production and research facilities, and FIEGE has local logistics operations. These employers are relevant starting points for career research, rather than a guarantee of available student vacancies. FIEGE’s Worms site also advertises a dual-study route combining international business with logistics and foreign trade. Expect warm summers with occasional hot days, cool winters with frost, and noticeably brighter conditions in spring than in midwinter. Bring both summer sun protection and layers for cold mornings. Summer offers outdoor festival evenings, with the Backfischfest marking the transition towards autumn. (Backfischfest (opens in a new tab))

Culture, language & food

Wine festivals and neighbourhood associations are part of local social life, while the Backfischfest brings fairground rides and regional wine to the Rhine-side festival ground. (City neighbourhoods (opens in a new tab), Backfischfest (opens in a new tab)) For meeting other students, campus-organised events are a practical starting point: the university describes student competitions, a campus gala and its student-produced Showabend. (University student events (opens in a new tab))

The university provides English-language guidance for international students and says eligible exchange students can complete their exchange in English. (Exchange information (opens in a new tab)) For everyday life, aim to build practical German rather than relying entirely on English; B1 is a useful personal target, not a universal admissions requirement. Enrolled students can take free university German courses from beginner to advanced levels. (German courses (opens in a new tab)) Local speech also appears in neighbourhood names: the city lists Hochheim as “Hochem” and Neuhausen as “Neihause”. (City neighbourhoods (opens in a new tab))
