About Jerichower Land district

Jerichower Land combines Elbe floodplains, woodland and the countryside towards the Fläming. Burg and Genthin provide rail connections towards Magdeburg and Berlin, making location within the district an important housing decision. (Regional tourism (opens in a new tab), DB timetable (opens in a new tab))

The district is known for its Romanesque churches, especially Jerichow Monastery, and for waterways and cycling routes. Its rural setting also contains substantial workplaces: Progroup operates paper, packaging and logistics facilities in Burg. (Regional tourism (opens in a new tab), Progroup (opens in a new tab))

Universities here

Universities in Jerichower Land district, biggest first.

Theologische Hochschule Friedensau, also called Friedensau Adventist University, offers an international campus community with an Adventist identity. (University (opens in a new tab)) Magdeburg offers further university options, including Otto von Guericke University and Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. For Friedensau students, campus accommodation is worth considering first: public transport reaches the university through Burg and bus 711, with some journeys requiring advance booking. (Accommodation (opens in a new tab), University travel advice (opens in a new tab)) This is a promising choice if you prefer campus community and countryside; test the complete journey before choosing a home for daily commuting.

Housing

Start with the university's furnished campus rooms, which are allocated subject to availability. In Burg, WOBAU explicitly offers furnished single apartments and student shared flats. These are concrete search routes, but they do not establish that the district's housing market is generally relaxed. (University accommodation (opens in a new tab), WOBAU Burg (opens in a new tab))

Cost of living

Friedensau's 2026/27 bulletin lists a €533 semester registration fee for new on-campus degree students, including the Deutschlandticket; programme tuition is separate where charged. Cafeteria lunches are listed at €2.90–€5.00 before the student discount. (University bulletin (opens in a new tab)) A separately purchased Deutschlandticket costs €63 monthly in 2026, so check your university entitlement before buying another subscription. (marego tariff (opens in a new tab)) Compare the complete budget—housing, tuition, insurance and travel—rather than assuming a rural address automatically costs less overall.

Jobs & employers

Burg has paper and packaging production, logistics, food manufacturing and healthcare employers. Progroup and Helios are useful starting points for career research; Helios explicitly offers internships and vocational training. Their presence does not guarantee flexible student vacancies. Getting around

Burg–Magdeburg Hbf takes approximately 17–23 minutes on many scheduled regional services; allow additional time to reach your campus. RE1 also serves Genthin and continues towards Brandenburg, Potsdam and Berlin. (DB timetable (opens in a new tab)) Friedensau's last leg is bus 711 from Burg; the university warns that some evening and weekend journeys require booking at least an hour ahead. (University travel advice (opens in a new tab)) The Deutschlandticket covers ordinary local buses and second-class regional trains, but generally excludes long-distance trains. (marego (opens in a new tab)) Check your actual outward and return journeys before relying on a rural connection.

Leipzig/Halle Airport — a practical regional option

Expect cold, dim winters with frosty days, followed by a brighter spring and generally mild-to-warm summers with occasional hot spells. Bring waterproof clothing as well as warm layers. Spring also brings local asparagus season, while autumn offers outings such as Burg's Museumsnacht. (Hohenseeden producer (opens in a new tab), Burg tourism (opens in a new tab)) Plan winter travel around your actual bus connections rather than daylight alone.

Culture, language & food

At Friedensau, student social life has a clear campus focus. The StuZ student centre offers food, board games, billiards and table football, while the university's Adventist identity shapes its community. (StuZ (opens in a new tab), University (opens in a new tab)) Elsewhere, events such as Burg's Museumsnacht bring churches, towers and cultural venues into the evening programme. (Burg tourism (opens in a new tab)) If frequent club nights are central to your plans, compare living in Magdeburg before choosing a rural address.

Friedensau offers counselling and social support in English as well as German, including help with appointments. (University bulletin (opens in a new tab)) Do not assume that every landlord, shop or workplace can handle everything in English. As a practical preparation goal, aim for B1 German for everyday independence and B2 for more demanding customer-facing work; these are recommendations, not university admission requirements.
