About Mittelsachsen district
Mittelsachsen stretches from central Saxony’s rolling countryside into the eastern Ore Mountains. Freiberg is the administrative seat; Döbeln and Mittweida are other main towns. Think of it as a district of separate towns and rural communities, rather than one continuous urban area. (District profile (opens in a new tab))
Mining heritage is especially visible around Freiberg, whose historic centre forms part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří UNESCO mining landscape. Elsewhere, the wooded Zschopau valley, Kriebstein Castle and its nearby reservoir offer a different side of the district. (Freiberg housing (opens in a new tab), Mittweida residence (opens in a new tab)) Commuting from Chemnitz is an option for Mittweida via the C14, but allow for the journey between the station and your teaching building. (City transport information (opens in a new tab)) This is worth considering if you prefer a campus-centred routine and access to countryside.

Housing
TU Freiberg describes the town’s housing market as relatively relaxed, with affordable private apartments and shared flats, while warning that popular residence rooms can fill at the start of teaching. That assessment applies to Freiberg; it should not be treated as a vacancy guarantee across the district. (University housing guidance (opens in a new tab))
The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.
How to find a place
- Apply through Studentenwerk Freiberg’s online rental portal early. You can apply before receiving your enrolment certificate, but must provide it when signing the rental agreement. (Housing FAQ (opens in a new tab))

- For private housing in Freiberg, consult the university’s links to Wohnungsgesellschaft Freiberg, Wohnungsgenossenschaft Freiberg and other local providers. Its housing scout also collects checked private offers. (University housing guidance (opens in a new tab))

Warmer months suit walks around Kriebstein reservoir, while Advent brings Freiberg’s Christmas market. Passenger boats operate seasonally, so check the timetable outside summer. Culture, language & food
Freiberg’s mining identity remains visible in the greeting “Glück auf!”, the Bergstadtfest miners’ parade and the mining traditions of its Christmas market. For student evenings, start with organised campus venues and events. Freiberg’s Alte Mensa hosts concerts, talks and student activities, while Mittweida’s Cosmopolitan Club and buddy programme help international students meet people. Expect a campus-scale social scene; check the current programme before planning a night out. (Studentenwerk cultural venues (opens in a new tab), Mittweida international community (opens in a new tab))
Use university international services as your first point of contact: Mittweida offers buddy support, while TU Freiberg provides German-language courses. (Mittweida international support (opens in a new tab), Freiberg German courses (opens in a new tab)) For housing, appointments and job searches, plan to use German or arrange language help. B1–B2 is a useful practical learning goal, not a universal admission requirement; check the language rules for your particular programme.
