About Zwickau district

Zwickau district lies in western Saxony, adjoining Chemnitz and Thuringia. Much of it belongs to the Erzgebirge foothills; Zwickau city is its administrative centre (district overview (opens in a new tab)).

Cars, textiles and music provide useful introductions to the area. Zwickau’s August Horch Museum explores vehicle manufacturing, while the city also preserves the birthplace of composer Robert Schumann (Saxony Tourism (opens in a new tab)). In Crimmitschau, the preserved Pfau textile factory explains another important strand of western Saxony’s industrial history (Industriekultur Sachsen (opens in a new tab)).

Main towns

Universities here

Universities in Zwickau district, biggest first.

The district has Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau in Zwickau and a Duale Hochschule Sachsen campus in Glauchau. Choose accommodation around your actual teaching location: WHZ’s city-centre and Scheffelberg campuses have different nearby housing options (Studentenwerk (opens in a new tab)), while Glauchau offers campus accommodation (DHSN (opens in a new tab)). Studying in Chemnitz while living in Zwickau is also possible: TU Chemnitz describes an approximately half-hour regional-express journey to its central station, before onward travel to your university building (TU Chemnitz (opens in a new tab)). This is worth considering if you prefer a smaller-city base and can accommodate the commute.

Housing

There is evidence of available student accommodation, rather than a basis for calling the entire district’s housing market tight or relaxed: TU Chemnitz reported vacancies in Zwickau residences in October 2026 (TU Chemnitz (opens in a new tab)). Published residence prices provide a useful budgeting starting point, but availability still needs confirmation.

The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.

How to find a place

  • Apply directly to Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau. Its guidance allows applications before final university admission and says applications are processed in order of receipt (housing FAQ (opens in a new tab)).
  • For Scheffelberg classes, consider Makarenkostraße in Eckersbach; the operator places this residence within walking distance of that campus (residence details (opens in a new tab)).
  • Check Zwickauer Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft’s own apartment search, which lets you filter by rooms, area, neighbourhood and cold rent. Compare the total monthly cost before choosing (ZWG (opens in a new tab)).
  • For DHSN Glauchau, ask Studentenwerk about campus rooms and whether your contract should cover only theory periods or continuous residence (DHSN housing guidance (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living

Useful published budget anchors are €258.50–€293.50 monthly for a single room in Innere Schneeberger Straße 23, Haus 2, plus a €380 deposit (Studentenwerk (opens in a new tab)). WHZ lists a semester contribution of €331.30 including the Deutschlandsemesterticket, checked November 2026 (WHZ (opens in a new tab)). If you do not have an included semester ticket, VMS lists the ordinary Deutschlandticket at €63 monthly in 2026 (VMS (opens in a new tab)). These figures help establish fixed costs; they do not establish a complete monthly budget or a measured saving against a particular large city.

Jobs & employers

Automotive manufacturing provides an important local employment base, including Volkswagen in Zwickau and Linamar in Crimmitschau (Volkswagen (opens in a new tab), Linamar (opens in a new tab)). Volkswagen Sachsen has a paid student-internship programme (student careers (opens in a new tab)). Healthcare offers another route into practical experience, although Heinrich-Braun-Klinikum explicitly describes its general student internships as unpaid (HBK (opens in a new tab)). WHZ’s international Career Service helps students connect with regional companies (WHZ (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around

Zwickau residences have tram connections between the city-centre and Scheffelberg areas (Studentenwerk (opens in a new tab)). The RE3 connects Zwickau, Glauchau, Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Chemnitz; the published weekday timetable gives approximately 10 minutes from Zwickau to Glauchau and 31 minutes to Chemnitz Hbf (VVO timetable (opens in a new tab)). Allow additional time between your accommodation, stations and teaching buildings. The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams, S-Bahn and second-class regional trains; it generally excludes long-distance services (VMS (opens in a new tab)). Check the operator’s current notices before travelling, particularly during engineering works (Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (opens in a new tab)).

Leipzig/Halle Airport

A practical nearby international airport: Zwickau’s city guide gives approximately 1 hour 31 minutes by rail from Zwickau. Dresden Airport is another option; compare flight availability and current connections (city airport guide (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cold, sometimes frosty winters, changeable spring and autumn weather, and generally mild summers with occasional hot days. Pack waterproof layers as well as a warm winter coat. June brings the Schumann festival programme (festival organiser (opens in a new tab)); late autumn leads into the Christmas-market season (Saxony Tourism (opens in a new tab)).

Culture, language & food

Local cultural identity connects industrial history with music: vehicle manufacturing and Robert Schumann are central themes in Zwickau’s museums (Saxony Tourism (opens in a new tab)). For social life, WHZ points newcomers towards pubs, student clubs and an introductory pub rally. Expect a smaller-city student scene; check individual venues’ programmes rather than assuming something runs every night (WHZ arrival guide (opens in a new tab)).

WHZ provides English-language arrival guidance, but plan to develop German for everyday independence and employment. Its language department offers general and subject-specific German courses and tandem learning (WHZ language support (opens in a new tab)). B1–B2 is a useful personal target, not a district-wide admission or employment requirement. Parts of the area have Erzgebirgisch dialect traditions; learning standard German remains the practical starting point (dialect background (opens in a new tab)).
