About Dithmarschen district
Dithmarschen lies on Schleswig-Holstein’s west coast, between the North Sea, the Elbe, the Eider and the Kiel Canal. Its coastline borders the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park (Dithmarschen Tourism (opens in a new tab)). Heide is the district’s administrative centre and the home of FH Westküste (Stadt Heide (opens in a new tab), FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)).
The district combines farming traditions, coastal tourism and substantial industry. Cabbage growing is celebrated at the Dithmarscher Kohltage, Büsum has a working fishing harbour, and Brunsbüttel produces chemical materials at Covestro’s industrial site (Kohltage (opens in a new tab), Büsum (opens in a new tab), Covestro (opens in a new tab)).
Main towns
Heide
The district capital, with a large central market square and FH Westküste’s campus (Stadt Heide (opens in a new tab), FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)).
Büsum
A North Sea resort with fishing boats, a museum harbour and access to guided mudflat walks (Dithmarschen Tourism (opens in a new tab)).
Meldorf
Known for its medieval St John’s church, commonly called the Meldorfer Dom (Dithmarschen Tourism (opens in a new tab)).
Brunsbüttel
A port and lock town where the Kiel Canal meets the Elbe, with a major chemical industry site (Dithmarschen Tourism (opens in a new tab), Covestro (opens in a new tab)).
Universities here
Universities in Dithmarschen district, biggest first.
Heide is the most practical starting point for students attending FH Westküste: the local Studentenwerk residence is directly beside the university (Studentenwerk SH (opens in a new tab)). International applicants can find English-taught master’s options in International Tourism Management and Microelectronic Systems (FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)). For study in Kiel, plan the actual journey carefully: the rail route through Neumünster involves changing trains, followed by travel to your campus (NAH.SH (opens in a new tab)). This is a good setting to consider if you want a smaller study town and coastal outings; choose accommodation around your timetable and transport needs.

Housing
Heide has a Studentenwerk residence offering shared flats and individual apartments beside campus, plus private accommodation advertised through the university (Studentenwerk SH (opens in a new tab), FH Westküste housing (opens in a new tab)). These are useful starting points, but the listings do not establish that the market is relaxed or that rooms are immediately available. Check transport carefully before choosing a rural address: some university-listed properties explicitly require a car.
The typical student rent we found, and what that figure covers, is in the key facts.
How to find a place
- Apply through the online application linked from the official Wohnheim Heide page; ask the operator about availability and the precise rent inclusions (Studentenwerk SH (opens in a new tab)).
- Check FH Westküste’s private housing board for Heide and surrounding villages, and compare each address with your campus journey (FH Westküste housing (opens in a new tab)).
- Use the Studentenwerk’s Heide-specific room-search guide: it lists WG-Gesucht, local providers and Dithmarscher Landeszeitung housing advertisements (Studentenwerk SH room search (opens in a new tab)).
- For a temporary arrival stay, the university points students to Jugendherberge Heide; check availability and its DJH membership requirement before booking (FH Westküste housing (opens in a new tab)).

Cost of living
FH Westküste’s international guide describes living in and around Heide as less expensive than Hamburg or Munich, without providing a like-for-like shopping-price comparison (international guide (opens in a new tab)). The published semester contribution for winter 2026/27 is €161 (FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)). Budget separately for transport: the regular Deutschlandticket costs €63 per calendar month in 2026, rising to €66.80 in January 2027 (current conditions (opens in a new tab), announced increase (opens in a new tab)). When comparing housing, include utilities and the cost of reaching campus or work.
Jobs & employers
Verified local employers span healthcare, oil refining and chemical production, while Büsum offers hospitality work (Westküstenkliniken (opens in a new tab), Raffinerie Heide (opens in a new tab), Covestro (opens in a new tab), Lighthouse jobs (opens in a new tab)). FH Westküste’s Career Service publishes student vacancies, including office support for a wind-energy business. Treat these as search leads: availability and suitability depend on the individual vacancy (FH Westküste Career Service (opens in a new tab)).
Typical student jobs
- Restaurant service assistance in Büsum, advertised by Lighthouse Hotel & Spa (Lighthouse jobs (opens in a new tab)).
- Hotel night reception and night-audit work in Büsum; Küstenperle explicitly accepts student assistants for this role (Küstenperle (opens in a new tab)).
- Student office support in wind-energy operations, including invoice checks, data maintenance and document management in Sankt Michaelisdonn (WES vacancy via FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)).

Getting around
Heide is the main rail interchange. RE6 connects it with Hamburg-Altona in roughly 1 hour 20 minutes on regular daytime services; RB63 links Büsum, Heide and Neumünster. Büsum–Heide takes about 26 minutes in the published timetable (RE6 timetable (opens in a new tab), RB63 timetable (opens in a new tab)). Check your travel date for changes. For rural addresses, inspect bus connections and any RuDi services: these follow scheduled routes but require advance booking, normally at least 45 minutes before departure and by 18:00 for same-day travel (DB Regio Bus (opens in a new tab)). The Deutschlandticket covers participating local buses and regional trains in second class; it generally excludes IC, EC and ICE services (NAH.SH (opens in a new tab), FH Westküste travel guide (opens in a new tab)).

Expect cool, damp winters, a brighter spring and generally mild summers. Rain remains part of the year, so waterproof clothing is useful for everyday journeys and coastal trips. Autumn brings the cabbage harvest celebrations in September (Dithmarscher Kohltage (opens in a new tab)). For student life, plan outdoor outings around the forecast and keep indoor options for wet days.
Culture, language & food
Local identity draws on Dithmarschen’s former farmers’ republic: even the cabbage festival has Kohlregentinnen, or cabbage regents, rather than queens (Dithmarschen Tourism (opens in a new tab)). Heide’s Saturday market is an everyday meeting place as well as somewhere to buy food (Stadt Heide (opens in a new tab)).
Low German has its own local tradition, documented through the Ditschi-Platt dictionary and publications (Ditschi-Platt (opens in a new tab)). For social life, approach the district as a small-town base: markets and regional festivals are useful starting points. If frequent big-city nights out matter to you, check the return journey before choosing where to live.
English can cover academic life on FH Westküste’s English-taught programmes, but the university recommends learning German to improve independence and job prospects (FH Westküste (opens in a new tab)). As a practical learning goal, aim for conversational B1 German and continue towards B2 for more demanding workplace communication; this is advice, not a universal admission requirement. Dithmarscher Platt is part of the region’s Low German heritage, but standard German is the sensible priority for newcomers (Ditschi-Platt (opens in a new tab)).
Local food
Mehlbeutel / Mehlbüdel
A large dumpling cooked in a cloth bag, served with fruit sauce or savoury accompaniments such as pork belly or sausage (regional food guide (opens in a new tab)).
Kohlrouladen
White-cabbage or savoy-cabbage leaves filled with minced meat and braised in cabbage broth (regional food guide (opens in a new tab)).
North Sea shrimp
Locally known as Krabben; Büsum’s working harbour and shrimp-fishing fleet make them particularly associated with the coast (Büsum (opens in a new tab)).
Birnen, Bohnen und Speck
A regional stew combining pears, beans, bacon and potatoes (regional food guide (opens in a new tab)).
