About Gera

Gera lies on the Weiße Elster in eastern Thuringia. Its former textile industry helped shape the city’s substantial villas and historic streets; today, it is an independent city with distinct neighbourhoods rather than a district of separate towns. Gera background (opens in a new tab)

The old town centres on the Renaissance town hall and market square. Across the city, Otto Dix’s birthplace, former beer-storage cellars and Hofwiesenpark offer different ways to explore Gera between classes. Universities here

Universities in Gera, biggest first.

Gera is particularly worth considering for practice-based study: Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach combines university teaching with placements at a partner organisation, and applicants must secure a partner and training contract. DHGE international admissions (opens in a new tab) Jena is also a possible commuting destination: DB currently shows examples taking approximately 37–47 minutes from Gera Hbf to Jena Paradies with a change, before travel to your teaching building. Check your actual timetable before choosing housing. DB Gera–Jena (opens in a new tab) Gera may suit you if you value a practical study structure and access to parks and cultural venues.

Housing

DHGE describes local housing companies as having sufficient student-oriented rental offers, suggesting a relatively accessible search rather than a heavily constrained market. This is university guidance, not a guarantee of availability. Start with private flats, shared accommodation and housing cooperatives. DHGE student information (opens in a new tab)

How to find a place

Cost of living

DHGE lists a Gera semester contribution of €321.80 for winter semester 2026, including €226.80 for the Deutschlandsemesterticket. DHGE semester fees (opens in a new tab) If you need a separate standard Deutschlandticket, it costs €63 per month in 2026; the announced price from January 2027 is €66.80. Federal government (opens in a new tab) Housing offers provide scope for a modest budget, but no verified like-for-like comparison of total living costs with larger cities was available. Budget separately for food, insurance, utilities not included in rent and any travel between study and placement locations.

Jobs & employers

Healthcare and manufacturing are useful sectors to investigate: Gera has the SRH Wald-Klinikum and ELECTRONICON’s capacitor production and development operations. ELECTRONICON also invites enquiries about internships and thesis topics. Expect cold, sometimes frosty winters and noticeably brighter spring days. Summer is generally mild to warm, but it is also the wettest season in the supplied climate record, so keep waterproof clothing handy. Hofwiesenpark provides outdoor space between classes, while the Märchenmarkt gives late autumn and early winter a seasonal gathering point. Culture, language & food

Gera’s cultural identity includes Otto Dix, whose reconstructed birthplace is a museum, and the former court theatre, now part of Theater Altenburg Gera. The Höhler preserve another strand of local history: underground spaces originally used to store beer. For evenings out, COMMA programmes concerts, parties, comedy, readings and film events. Check its calendar when planning a night out; its existence supports a local music and club scene, but does not establish how Gera’s nightlife compares with larger university cities. COMMA (opens in a new tab)

For DHGE, English alone is insufficient: lectures, seminars and examinations are in German, and the university strongly recommends C1 or higher, documented by an appropriate certificate. DHGE international admissions (opens in a new tab) For everyday life, prepare to handle rental enquiries, appointments and workplace conversations in German; treat this as practical preparation rather than a measured claim about local English proficiency.
