What WIMU does in your assistant
WIMU is a guide to studying in Germany. Its catalogue covers courses at German universities, and a WIMU account keeps your applicant profile, your application tracker and your CVs. With WIMU connected, your assistant can:
- search courses by subject, degree level, field, teaching language and the university’s city, and show a course’s requirements, deadlines and fees where WIMU knows them;
- rank courses by how well they fit your profile, with the same ranking as the WIMU web app;
- add courses to your application tracker, update their status and show what each application still needs;
- set up your study preferences and your applicant profile from what you tell it;
- read your CVs and motivation letters, help you write or improve them with its own AI, and save what you approve to WIMU.
In Claude and ChatGPT, a list of courses, a map, a course or your tracker shows as one small WIMU card in the chat. Its Open panel button opens the WIMU panel, where you can switch between the list, the map and your tracker, filter and sort the results, and open a course. Your assistant’s answer stays in the chat. Hosts without panels, such as Claude Code, show the same results as text. Everything WIMU saves goes to your WIMU account, so it also shows in the WIMU web app.
Course details come from public sources, and some are missing. Deadlines are the next expected dates, so check the university’s own page before you rely on one.
Connect WIMU
Every assistant connects to the same address, https://mcp.whereismyuni.com/mcp. You can search courses straight away; you sign in only when you use something personal, such as your tracker.
Until WIMU is listed in Claude’s and ChatGPT’s directories, add it as a custom connector with the server URL, as below. Once it’s listed, you can also find Where Is My Uni in the directory and select Connect.
Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)
- Open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector, name it Where Is My Uni and paste the server URL above. Leave the advanced OAuth settings empty.
- Turn WIMU on for a chat from the tools menu, then ask a question. WIMU asks you to sign in the first time you use something personal.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http wimu https://mcp.whereismyuni.com/mcpThen run /mcp, choose wimu and sign in. Claude Code shows no panels, so results come back as text.
ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Select Create app, name it Where Is My Uni, paste the server URL above and choose OAuth for authentication.
- Mention WIMU in a chat or pick it from the tools menu.
OpenAI decides which plans and countries get developer mode and the apps directory. If you can’t add WIMU, it may not be available to you yet.
Codex
Add the server, then sign in:
codex mcp add wimu --url https://mcp.whereismyuni.com/mcp
codex mcp login wimuCodex opens WIMU’s sign-in page in your browser.
Public tools and signing in
Searching courses, looking up a course or university and showing universities on a map are public: they need no account and no sign-in. Everything personal (ranking, your tracker, your profile, your CVs and letters) needs you to sign in to WIMU.
When a tool needs it, your assistant opens WIMU’s sign-in page. Sign in with the Google account you use for WIMU. If you don’t have a WIMU account yet, signing in creates one; you must be 18 or over to have one. Signing in shares your email address and name with the assistant. The consent screen names the assistant and asks for permissions like these:
emailYour email address.profileYour name.wimu.profile.readSee your applicant profile, onboarding answers and CVs.wimu.profile.writeChange your profile, onboarding answers and CVs.wimu.tracker.readSee the courses in your application tracker and their motivation letters.wimu.tracker.writeAdd, update and remove tracked courses, and save their motivation letters.wimu.ai.useRank courses for you with WIMU's recommendations.offline_accessStay connected without signing in again every day.
If a tool needs a permission you haven’t approved yet, such as changing your tracker, your assistant asks you to approve it before the tool runs.
Opening your tracker asks only to see it: list_my_applications needs wimu.tracker.read. If you then change or remove a course from the panel, the panel asks your assistant in the chat, and your assistant asks you to approve wimu.tracker.write first.
Onboarding and your profile
Every assistant gets the same WIMU tools. WIMU stores and returns your data; your assistant does the asking and the reading, with its own AI.
- Onboarding. Before WIMU can rank courses for you, it needs your answers to a few questions: where you’re from, your education, the subjects you studied, the level you want, your English and German, and your interests. If you ask for recommendations first, WIMU tells your assistant which questions to ask. Your assistant asks them in the chat and saves your answers in one step (
submit_onboarding_answers). You can also answer them in the WIMU web app. - Your profile. Tell your assistant what to add or change, such as a degree, a job or your skills, and it saves the details you give or confirm to your WIMU profile (
update_my_profile). WIMU never receives files from the chat.
WIMU saves only what your assistant sends for you, never your chat. The tools ask your assistant to send only what you gave for WIMU, never to take details from elsewhere in the chat, its memory or other files without asking you, not to guess, and to show you what will be saved first. Both tools replace what they save, so your assistant should ask you before running them.
Tools
These are the tools your assistant can call. Hosts show them by these names when they ask for your approval.
Courses and universities
Search courses
search_coursesSearches WIMU's catalogue of German university courses by subject words, degree level, field of study, teaching language, the university's city or state, deadline dates, intake and fee type. It counts every match, lists the first courses, and opens a WIMU panel where you can filter, sort and browse them.
- No sign-in
Get course
get_courseShows one course and its university, with requirements, deadlines and fees where WIMU knows them. Check the university's own page before relying on a date.
- No sign-in
Get university
get_universityShows one university and its courses, with the same counts and panel as a search.
- No sign-in
Compare courses
compare_coursesPuts up to five courses side by side: deadlines, language requirements, fees, duration, credits and a short admission summary. Check the university's own page before relying on a date.
- No sign-in
Show universities on a map
show_universities_on_mapOpens the WIMU panel on a map of the universities with matching courses, with the same filters as a search and the number of matches at each. Select a university to see its courses. The map images come from CARTO, which sees your IP address when it sends them.
- No sign-in
Rank courses for me
rank_courses_for_meRanks courses by how well they fit your WIMU profile, onboarding answers and eligibility, best match first, with short reasons for each. It's the same ranking as the WIMU web app, and it takes the same filters as a search.
- Sign-in
Your applications
List my applications
list_my_applicationsShows the courses in your application tracker, with each one's status, document checklist, and whether it has a CV and a motivation letter.
- Sign-in
Add course to tracker
add_course_to_trackerAdds a course to your application tracker with a default document checklist. Adding a course that's already there changes nothing.
- Sign-in
Update application status
update_application_statusChanges the status of one tracked application, for example from preparing to submitted.
- Sign-in
Remove course from tracker
remove_course_from_trackerRemoves a course from your tracker and permanently deletes its checklist, drafted documents and uploaded files. It can't be undone, so WIMU marks it as destructive and your assistant should ask you before running it.
- Sign-in
Your profile
Get my profile
get_my_profileShows your applicant profile and onboarding answers. If you haven't answered the onboarding questions yet, it tells your assistant which ones to ask.
- Sign-in
Update my profile
update_my_profileSaves changes to your applicant profile, such as your education, work experience, languages and skills, from what you tell your assistant. Details you don't mention stay as they are. Your assistant should show you the changes and ask before saving.
- Sign-in
Submit onboarding answers
submit_onboarding_answersSaves your answers to WIMU's onboarding questions, which your assistant asks in the chat: where you're from, your education, the subjects you studied, the level you want, your English and German, and your interests. It completes onboarding, replacing answers saved earlier, so WIMU can rank courses for you.
- Sign-in
CVs and letters
Get motivation letter context
get_motivation_letter_contextGives your assistant what it needs to help you write a motivation letter for one course: the course's requirements and deadlines, your background from your CV or profile, and the letter you've already saved for it. It saves nothing.
- Sign-in
Save motivation letter
save_motivation_letterSaves a letter you approved to a course in your tracker, where you can edit it in the WIMU letter editor. A letter already saved is replaced only when you agree.
- Sign-in
Get my CV
get_my_cvLists your WIMU CVs and shows one in full, such as the one tailored to a course, so your assistant can review or tailor it with you.
- Sign-in
Save my CV
save_my_cvSaves CV changes you approved, or a new CV, to WIMU, where you can edit it and download a PDF. It won't overwrite changes you made in the web app since your assistant read the CV.
- Sign-in
CVs and letters
Your assistant writes and improves CVs and motivation letters with its own AI. WIMU gives it what it needs, such as the course’s requirements and your background, and saves what you approve to your WIMU account, where it shows in the web app’s CV and letter editors. A saved letter is replaced only when you agree, and a CV changed in the web app since your assistant read it isn’t overwritten.
Example prompts
Try these once WIMU is connected:
“Find English-taught Master's programmes in computer science in Munich”
Searches the catalogue with search_courses. No sign-in needed.
“Which courses in Germany fit my WIMU profile best?”
Ranks courses for your profile with rank_courses_for_me. Asks you to sign in.
“Show my WIMU applications and what I still need to do”
Opens your application tracker with list_my_applications, including each course's document checklist.
“Add that course to my WIMU tracker”
Adds the course with add_course_to_tracker and a default document checklist.
“Help me write a motivation letter for that course”
Reads the course and your background with get_motivation_letter_context. Your assistant writes the letter with you, and saves it to your tracker with save_motivation_letter once you approve it.
Your data
- WIMU receives only what each tool call sends, such as your search words or a course, and which WIMU account you’re signed in to. It never stores your chat.
- What a tool saves, such as a tracked course, your onboarding answers or your profile, is kept in your WIMU account, just as when you use the web app.
- For each request WIMU records which assistant made it, which tool ran, whether it worked and how long it took. Instead of the tool’s inputs it keeps a one-way fingerprint of them. These records are deleted after 90 days. About request records
- When you’re not signed in, WIMU uses a hashed (one-way) form of your IP address to limit requests.
- Letters and CV changes are written by your assistant: WIMU runs no AI on them, and only stores what your assistant saves. Ranking courses for you sends your search words and a summary of your profile to OpenAI and Cohere. Saving your onboarding answers or profile refreshes what the ranking compares, with OpenAI.
- No WIMU tool in an assistant uses or spends WIMU credits.
- Your conversation belongs to the assistant’s provider (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT and Codex), which handles it under its own privacy policy.
The full details are in the privacy policy’s section on AI assistants and the terms of service.
Disconnect WIMU
Remove WIMU in your assistant:
- Claude: Settings → Connectors, open Where Is My Uni and disconnect or remove it.
- ChatGPT: open Where Is My Uni in your connected apps and disconnect it.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp remove wimu - Codex:
codex mcp remove wimu, or uninstall the plugin.
You can also block an assistant from WIMU’s side. In the web app, open Profile → Connected apps and select Remove. WIMU then refuses every request from that assistant for your account, even if it’s still connected, until you select Allow again. This doesn’t remove WIMU from the assistant itself, so do both.
Disconnecting doesn’t delete what you saved in WIMU. To delete everything, including request records, delete your account in the web app under Profile → Account. Your controls in the privacy policy
Troubleshooting
Sign-in fails or keeps coming back
Disconnect WIMU in your assistant, connect again and sign in with the Google account you use for WIMU. If you removed the assistant under Connected apps, select Allow again there first.
“Too many requests”
WIMU limits how fast tools can be called. The message says how long to wait before you try again.
A letter or CV wasn’t saved
A letter can only be saved for a course in your tracker, so ask your assistant to add the course first. If a letter is already saved, your assistant asks before replacing it. If you changed a CV in the web app after your assistant read it, ask it to read the CV again and redo its changes.
I see text instead of a WIMU panel
Some hosts, such as Claude Code and Codex, don’t show panels. The text has the same results, and everything else works the same.
Recommendations say onboarding is needed
WIMU ranks courses with your onboarding answers. Answer the questions your assistant asks, or answer them in the WIMU web app, then ask for recommendations again.
A tool is missing
If WIMU was connected before a tool was added, disconnect and connect again so your assistant reloads the list.
A course detail looks wrong
Check the university’s own page, then tell us at support@whereismy.group with the course and the university.
Support
Email support@whereismy.group. Say which assistant you use (Claude, ChatGPT or Codex), which tool you were using and roughly when. Please don’t send your CV or other documents unless we ask. More ways to get help are on the help page.
